In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
I find it so hard to be true
And all these lies I'm telling you
Are little anchors in my chest
That pull us down into this mess
I find it easy to distract
Just as soon as you turn your back
I'll be gone again
I find it so hard to be true
And all these secrets, I keep from you
Are like a blackness in my heart
That only tears us both apart
I find it easy to pretend
That we're not heading for our end
That's why I'm telling you
I built a wall, I cut you off
Now there's no lies that's gonna fix this up
I played the saint and a saint I ain't
Now all the hurt is here again, here again
I find it so hard to be true
But I'm gonna try my best for you
And every distance that we've known
Will disappear before too long
And every line we've ever drawn
Will be erased before we're gone
And this I swear to you
I built a wall, I cut you off
Now there's no lie that's gonna fix this hurt
I played the saint, I cursed your name
Now there's no one but myself to blame, that you're gone
Could I have put it this way
It's wishing only
To see it's never too late
I'm feeling it work for me
And every word that you say
I got my heart out for you
And only wish that you'd wait
Till I was waving away
I know that I may have you
There's no more fire left in me
I'm breaking down all the walls
You slowly built around me
Why do you ask for my trust
When you're not worthy of it
I find it hard to adjust
Till I get it from me
And all these lies I'm telling you
Are little anchors in my chest
That pull us down into this mess
I find it easy to distract
Just as soon as you turn your back
I'll be gone again
I find it so hard to be true
And all these secrets, I keep from you
Are like a blackness in my heart
That only tears us both apart
I find it easy to pretend

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
the lyrics here have many errors, slso neither of you are right with the lyrics at the end of the song even if Glen did tell you himself! its
How could I live with this weight You keep on pushing on me You say it's never too late I'm afraid it is though for me
When every word that you say I cut my heart up on it You only pushed me away Till I was way beyond it
I'm moving on without you There's no more fight left in me I'm breaking down all the walls You slowly built around me
Why do you ask for my trust When you´re not worthy of it I find it hard to adjust To the lines you´re drawing for me
