This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
I'm gonna make it bend and break (it sent you to me without wings)
Say a prayer, but let the good times roll
In case God doesn't show (let the good times roll, let the good times roll)
And I want these words to make things right
But it's the wrongs that make the words come to life
"Who does he think he is?"
If that's the worst you've got
Better put your fingers back to the keys
One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories, even though they weren't so great
"He tastes like you, only sweeter"
One night, yeah and one more time
Thanks for the memories, thanks for the memories
"See, he tastes like you, only sweeter," oh oh oh oh oh
Been looking forward to the future
But my eyesight is going bad
And this crystal ball
It's always cloudy except for (except for)
When you look into the past (look into the past)
One night stand (one night)
(One night stand off)
One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories, even though they weren't so great
"He tastes like you, only sweeter"
One night, yeah, and one more time
Thanks for the memories, thanks for the memories
"See, he tastes like you, only sweeter," oh oh oh oh oh
They say I only think in the form of crunching numbers
In hotel rooms, collecting page six lovers
Get me out of my mind and get you out of those clothes
I'm a liner away from getting you into the mood, whoa
One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories, even though they weren't so great
"He tastes like you, only sweeter"
One night, yeah, and one more time (oh, oh)
Thanks for the memories, thanks for the memories
"See, he tastes like you, only sweeter," oh oh oh oh oh

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms.
“Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
This song is clearly about the end of Pete Wentz's friendship with childhood friend Christopher Gutierrez. It's sort of a long story, but most of the legit. fans know what I'm talking about. The whole "put your fingers back to the keys" thing definitely references Chris's tirade against Pete in his livejournal. And the lines about one-night-stands support the theory that Pete was messing around with Chris's girlfriend, Kate.
Can you explain the whole story? I'm new to the FOB fanbase. What happened?<br /> <br /> FOB <3
I've always been fairly certain this is about being Christian and struggling with your sexuality, and the first 4 lines seal it for me.
"I'm gonna make it bend and break (They sent you to me without wings)"
He's gonna bend and break the rules of modern day male/female relationships. I think the second line refers to the man he's gonna have this 'one night stand' with, because he certainty wasn't pointed towards this man by God.
"Say a prayer, but let the good times roll In case God doesn't show"
Homosexuality is supposed to be forbidden, taboo, anti-Christian etc etc. The narrator is apologizing for his 'sins', but he's gonna continue to engage in them anyway cause God might not be the fag hating being he's portrayed to be, or he might not even be real at all.
And of course, the 'he tastes like you only sweeter' line.
@chlamydia Out of all the comments I think yours is the best.
@chlamydia , very creative but no. You are very wrong, in fact, if you look into it the line "He tastes like you only sweeter," comes from the 1997 play that was then made into a movie in 2004 called Closer. In the movie a wife cheats on her husband and as the husband is blowing up asking her about the details he asks "Do you like him cumming on your face?" and she responds "YES" and then he asks what he tastes like and her reply was "He tastes like you, only sweeter"<br /> <br /> And this is backed when Pete Wentz was asked about the song's meaning he stated that it's in fact about a broken up couple that continues to sleep together. He was even asked about the controversial lyric mentioned above and he clarified that it was a line from the movie Closer.<br /> <br /> Everything you were saying about how homosexuality is taboo may be true, but it has nothing to do with the song. The song's about how this guy is staying with his girlfriend and he isn't happy being with her. He knows deep down inside that he shouldn't be with her, but he can't help feel as though he needs to be with her, so he keeps sleeping with her which is another factor keeping him in the relationship. As for where the controversial lyric fits in, I'm pretty sure it refers to another sexual partner.<br /> <br /> Cheers on creativity but maybe do some research next time.
It's "he tastes like you, only sweeter". It's a line from the movie Closer.
My favorite song on the album. I can't help but sing along every time I hear it.
I am in love.
Possible gay undertones here? I realize it's a quote from a movie but wouldn't the line "he tastes like you only sweeter" be inappropriate for a male best friend unless they were secret lovers?
no, just the movie... I think
@smileyball why do you think the song means there gay i mean in my understandings it means a girl is cheating on them
okay i am just a freaking little girl hear in the seventh grade i am so sorry
as I think everyone knows the song is loosely based on the film 'Closer', Pete admitted that he found the film painfully true. People have said there are connections to Chris, but I don't really know the full details of that, and surely he'd be over all that by now?
The HeyChris theory fits. "And I want these words to make things right, but it’s the wrong that make the words come to life" - he wants this song to make things right with him, but his mistakes are what made him write this song in the first place. And the part "they say you only think, in the form of crunching numbers" could be about Chris saying in that post that Pete has sold out and only cares about the money and attention.
When I'm dead and gone, I want to be buried with the words 'Thnks Fr Th Mmrs' on my coffin/gravestone and to be laying arms crossed with 'Take This To Your Grave' in my hands. Is that weird, or does that mean I'm a really devoted fan?
@F4LL0U78oy No, it doesn't mean that you're weird. I'm pretty sure that a few other people would do the same thing. You're just a die hard fan! And that's perfectly fine! :) Besides, everyone is unique and therefore different. The only one with the right to judge is God. Until judgement day comes, try to let other's judgements roll right off your shoulders!
Love this song. And the theory fits, of course. And I loved the reference to "Closer." The meaning was so confusing at first, because, Like "Calm Before The Strom" it began to sound x-rated based on the "He tastes like you, only sweeter" and of course, that got people talking. I knew that the song had something to do with one night stands, and not because of the actual line stating it. But I never even thought about the chris theory. So, thanks.
more like prostitution to me than heychris. amazing song never the less.
and better put your fingers back to the keys
But anyway, this song seriously screams HeyChris vs. Pete.
Who does he think he is? Is that the worst you’ve got?
Totally Pete calling him out. Aaah, I wonder if there's any hidden meanings about Morrisey posters and taking pictures of yourself. =]
