Ten below and falling fast
Those days of summer were long past
My horoscope said you'd come back
I have my doubts, you see
And as I watched the mercury
And thought about the prophecy
A new moon and an early thaw
I watched the door for you

If January stars came true

And as I gaze at winter stars
The second house conjunct with Mars
They would suggest that we'll be one
I have my doubts, you see

If I maintain a sceptic's eye
And train the other on the sky
I'd eat my hat if it came true
I'd probably eat yours too

If January stars came true
If January stars came true

Now I'm in a pretty mess
It's getting warmer I confess
My horoscope said you'd come back
I have my doubts it's true

And as I watched the mercury
And thought about the prophecy
A new moon and an early thaw
I left the door for you

If January stars
If January stars
If January stars came true
January stars

In this story two people met in summer. She left and by winter, he was hoping his horoscope was correct and she would return. Like any of us, he’s not sure he should trust the stars—despite the second house being conjunct with Mars. And he wasn’t thinking she would return but if she did, he was ready to eat hats.

I found this song so amusing—makes me smile.

You know those days, both warm and hazy Which melt into tears The hearts that they bewitch? You too resemble such a lit horizon One would have thought your eyes were veiled in haze The fainting eyelids droop and giddy fear thrusts with both hands The soul towards the pit Round goes the languorous waltz again Again The violin trembles A sorrowing soul that fears the unknown night That is the pit of hell Let’s roll in it ourselves to keep alive our hatred without end Oh, lets!

Muse of my heart When January unleashes storm and sleet Will you have coals to warm your violet feet? Or starving clown, show off your charms Your smile Wet with tears that none see to beguile And cheer the sick spleen of the vulgar herd?

    Baudelaire [paraphrased]

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Ed Sheeran
“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
