[Chorus]
His spirit joined and so was formed
Ten thousand years ago
Between the swan and Hercules
Where even dark clouds glow

To live with grace, to ride the swell
To yet be strong of will
To love the wind, to learn it's song
And empty space to fill

Apollo taught me to rhyme
Orpheus taught me to play
Andromeda cast down her sign
And Vega lights my way

Smoke rings in a galaxy
An endless flight through time
Lyra gave her harp to him
And left him free to climb

A winter's journey from the moon
To reach the summer sun
To rise again, to sing for you
A song that's yet unsung

Apollo taught me to rhyme
Orpheus taught me to play
Andromeda cast down her sign
And Vega lights my way

[Chorus]

To live with grace, to ride the swell
To yet be strong of will
To love the wind, to learn her song
And empty space to fill

    My Interpretation

I have loved this song since I was 10 years old, even then not knowing what it meant. Over the decades I have thought about Spirit and what John was trying to tell us. "The Spirit joined and so was formed 10,000 years ago" speaks of the beginning of time, whether it be 10 thousand years or 10 billion years ago, a long time ago the Spirt came into "being". "Between the Swan and Hercules where even dark clouds glow"; in between these two constellations in the sky is what we can see of the Milky Way Galaxy and yes, even the dark clouds of the galaxy seem to glow especially on very dark nights. The Spirit is present here and John feels his destiny was formed 10,000 years ago along with the Spirt. (who in Judaism and Catholicism is a third person in the Triad)

The refrain: Apollo, the God of the Sun, and a passionate expressive lover taught or moved John to rhyme, to write, perhaps reflecting John discovering his talent to write songs like Sunshine On My Shoulders. "Opheus taught me to play": Orpheus was the most famous and talented musician of Greek mythology and his songs were said to be miraculous and above superhuman powers. This song, Spirit, was written after John's hits of Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High, etc and Denver's rise to fame. Rising as he did, I am sure John felt that the heavens endowed him with his talents. Andromeda cast down her sign" : She was one of the most beautiful daughters of a god and she and her mother boasted of this beauty. She was to be punished by being tied to a rock and eaten by a sea serpent but was saved by Perseus. All I gather from this is that Andromeda "cast down her sign" recognized boasting as offensive and after being saved by Perseus became much more humble. (Who wouldn't after almost being eaten by a serpent!) John found value in this lesson. Vega is the nearest star to our sun in the galaxy. "Vega lights my way" John is reaching and rising to higher thinking.

"Smoke rings in a galaxy" might refer to the Ring Nebula in the Milky Way, through which another galaxy passed through the ring, it would have taken millions of years to do so and thus be "an endless flight through time". "Lyra gave her harp (a lyre) to him (Orpheus) and left him free to climb. " In mythology, Orpheus gets into a battle and the lyre is thrown into a river. My own interjection here is that John finds this instrument in his guitar as he continues to say: "A winter's journey from the moon to reach the summers sun"; I do believe this phrase refers to himself, having been born in December, it is a winter's journey to the summer sun (perhaps Sunshine on My Shoutders ?) "To rise again, to sing for you, a song that's yet unsung". He is the ever-talented Opheus, rising again to sing and play for us, to be an example, "to live in grace, to ride the swell (the ocean) to love the wind, to learn her song, an empty space to fill". John felt this was his purpose to walk in grace in nature, to love the wind and its sounds; It is John's purpose to fill that empty space--which he does, in the song, singing high and low tones, not words, the way the Spirit speaks for all of us to our God in song, tones, groans, moans, sending our messages, feelings, to our Creator. The song at the end also mimics the wind

Okay, so tell me, am i off the wall? or does some of this make sense..

Light Up The Sky

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
