I am alive
I am alive
and that is the best that i can do

you told me you lied
you swore you were mine
I'll take you back a thousand times

Talk of the town
you've been around
if he is the man you want then go

but tonight we'll leave
all our lovers behind
and try to live a quiet life
my love has dressed me like a clown

you are an ass
a snake in the grass
and he seeps from out your pores

and baby it's time
to pay for my crime
nothing i say can make you mine

you either sing it in key
or run into me
i can fake it as good as you

but tonight we'll leave
all our stupid songs
we'll drive and reach the hills by dawn
my love has dressed me like a clown

but tonight we'll leave
all our lovers behind
and try to live a quiet life
margot dress me like a clown

tonight we'll drink
into an early grave
we'll laugh, we will not be safe
someone has dressed us all like clowns

darling it's in
where do i begin?
putting the contact lenses in

you say the lights
scurry like mice
reflect on the streets in your blue eyes

out on the roof
wait to grow up
turn me around and lock me up

baby you are an ass
a snake in the grass
vanity oozes out your pores

Oooh, ooooh
Oooh, ooooh

also, it is "Gomer, you lied" not "you go near your light"

this was an early title for the song.

also it's "my love has dressed me like a clown" and "margot has dressed me like a clown"

and at the end, it's "reflectin the streets in your blue eyes. out on the roof, way to grow up, turn me around then bog me up, baby you are an asp, a snake in the grass, vanity oozes out your pores."

margot refers to margot tenenbaum. the song is about the movie; an article confirms this in harp magazine from i think september. the article is probably online. miki is right, the song refers to margot's infidelity in the film the royal tenenbaums, whether it's to her husband or to her adopted brother richie. she's screwing around with eli cash. the end.

I'd like to point out it's 'asp' and not 'ass'.

i think this song is about a man who loves a woman who can't stay faithful to him. he loves her, he'll forgive her, he'll take her back every time she strays, but she still can't be with one man and it kills him inside. she's the "talk of the town" (people gossiping), and he even insists that if she wants the other guys, to just leave him and be with them. but at night when he’s with her, he tries to forget all her other lovers and tries to "live a quiet life" with her, as in, imagining she's not cheating on him. when she's "dressing him as a clown" it's her playing him as the fool: he knows, she knows, everyone knows, but he still pretends that she only loves him. he knows inside that "nothing i say could make you mine."

i also think "i can think it as good as you" is "fake it," as in, if you pretend you're only with me, i'll pretend too. i also think it's interesting that he sings "margot" in there, because margot tenenbaum was cheating on her husband blatantly in The Royal Tenenbaums.

i tihnk this is one of the best song off of the dust of retreat. margot and the nuclear so and sos are fucking beyond words.

maybe, 'dress me up like a clown' signifies the fact that each time he takes her back he is humiliated because he knows that the same thing will happen again and again, however, margot, i heard in an interview, is his daughter...

"I swore you were mine. I'd take you back a thousand times."

I love those lines and I think it sums up most of the song. She is everything to him, but she's "been around" the town and he knows it. As much as he dislikes that he still cares for her and because everyone knows she is unfaithful she is "dressing him like a clown".. or playing him for a fool.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
