This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

I've always loved this song but now it means soo much more. I just found out my ex (the first guy i ever fell for) is now engaged. I will the first to admit I will never be completely over him. And I actually sent him a text earlier today that said " I hear congratulations are in order" When his best friend (which i'm still really close to) asked me how i felt i just told him that I was happy for my ex...and he saw right through it but that's because the new girl is horrible. But the first time you hear that your ex is engaged is never good...
