When I first heard this song, I thought that it was strange that Against Me was singing about something as simple as girls, since their songs are usually not so shallow. Looking at the lyrics more, and it may be a stretch, but it sounds like it's about a guy who has a disease like HIV (or another STD) and can't develop relationships with women because he'll be forced to tell them what's wrong with him.

As things start to get more serious he realizes that he must tell her the truth about his condition and why they can’t hook up.

Self-explanatory, the guy just wants to be healthy and the disease has left him unable to even get a bit of company from a girl.
The next part says that he has to accept what has happened, and I don’t know what the last part is talking about.
I’d hate to start rumors, but hopefully this song and the song “Searching for a Former Clarity” are just Tom’s overactive imagination, or maybe contain some other meanings that have gone over everyone’s heads.

i agree with sinksink. i think the last verse is about him getting so worried about having to explain the situation/condition that he has somehow said something to the girl while drunk?
"Baby, its not you specifically it could be anybody". Maybe here he is trying to say to her that its not her fault they cant be together, its his.
so before anything has even progressed he has said something stupid and ruined it all anyway.
... hence the title of "pretty girls". everyone gets nervous around them and cock things up.
thank you sink sink. i have been listening to this song a lot lately and decided that that's what i thought it meant (HIV, AIDS), but wasnt sure because i hadnt read the lyric sheet, and because without that 'sexual', that would be looking really far into the song. i like this song even more now
Does anyone know what (the mover) (the shaker) etc mea? I heard a rumour they were terms used in the record industry for differant types of songs and their position in the album.
