In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Be my husband, I'll be your wife
Be my husband, I'll be your wife
Be my husband, I'll be your wife
Outside you there is no place to go.
If you want me to I'll cook and sew
If you want me to I'll cook and sew
If you want me to I'll cook and sew
Outside you there is no place to go.
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Please don't treat me so doggone mean
Please don't treat me so doggone mean
Please don't treat me so doggone mean
you're the meanest man I ever seen
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Stick to the promise man, that you made me
Stick to the promise man, that you made me
Stick to the promise man, that you made me
That you'll stay away from Rosalie
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Be my husband, I'll be your wife
Be my husband, I'll be your wife
Outside you there is no place to go.
If you want me to I'll cook and sew
If you want me to I'll cook and sew
If you want me to I'll cook and sew
Outside you there is no place to go.
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Please don't treat me so doggone mean
Please don't treat me so doggone mean
Please don't treat me so doggone mean
you're the meanest man I ever seen
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Stick to the promise man, that you made me
Stick to the promise man, that you made me
Stick to the promise man, that you made me
That you'll stay away from Rosalie
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good
Oh daddy now now love me good

Whithout sounding too, well sarcastic. Its a bit repetative. Dont think so?? See above lyrics
repetitive, but brilliant. :)
Ilove this song live. It sounds very tribal.
Repetitive or not this song is brilliant. It reminds me a lot of the when women were not considered as important as men. When men controlled women, they just did what they were told.
It was written for Nina Simone I think, can't remember who by but def not by Damien.
nina simone is amazzzzzzzzzzing. everyone go listen to her. now.
this is originally by Nina Simone, but must be honorably noted by Jeff Buckley's cover on the Live at Sin-e album. i haven't heard Damien's cover.
Damien Rice doesn't cover this, Lisa Hannigan does (did)

Song was written by Nina Simone. Jeff Buckley's cover on Live at Sin-e is a great one (love that man) but Lisa's version is good too. Different, very tribal definitely, but good.
