This is one of my favorite songs. https://fnfgo.io
All night I lay on my pillow and pray
For my boss to stop me in the hallway
Lay my head on his shoulder and say
Son, I've been hearing good things
I wake up without warning and go flying around the house
In my sauvignon fierce, freaking out
Take a forty-five minute shower and kiss the mirror
And say, look at me
Baby, we'll be fine
All we gotta do is be brave and be kind
I put on an argyle sweater and put on a smile
I don't know how to do this
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
Baby, come over, I need entertaining
I had a stilted, pretending day
Lay me down and say something pretty
Lay me back down where I wanted to stay
Just say something perfect, something I can steal
Say, look at me
Baby, we'll be fine
All we've gotta do is be brave and be kind
I pull off your jeans, and you spill Jack and Coke in my collar
I melt like a witch and scream
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
For my boss to stop me in the hallway
Lay my head on his shoulder and say
Son, I've been hearing good things
I wake up without warning and go flying around the house
In my sauvignon fierce, freaking out
Take a forty-five minute shower and kiss the mirror

All we gotta do is be brave and be kind
I put on an argyle sweater and put on a smile

I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything
I'm so sorry for everything

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
To me, this song came on my shuffle & I heard it for the first time at possibly the most poignant moment of my life.

This song is utterly hopeless & embodies the feeling of depression perfectly. It is simple & beautiful. Gosh, it cut me down... Personally, I believe the writer should be seeking salvation from loving God & being loved by God. I hope anyone reading this may find some comfort because if you're connecting to this song, you're probably feeling as miserable & forsaken as I do right now. Things will get better. Just be patient & trust in God. Seek first His kingdom. <3
Wise words :)

I love this song, and I can definitely identify with it.

I think it goes beyond depression though- depression always has a root. I think that root is insecurity, a sense of an unstable environment. That's why he's seeking approval. That's why he can't rest. That's why even the wine can't calm him down. That's why the physical intimacy can't calm him down. That's why he needs the words he can steal and remember.

I definitely "lock" the texts that say nice things, reassuring things.

Ultimately, it's that frenzy- you hate feeling the way you do and feel extreme remorse for it, but he can't find the cure. I agree that God's love is the antidote.

This song reminds me of:

Anxiety Attack - Jeffrey Lewis
Still Be Around - Uncle Tupelo
Amen.

For all those who don't believe in God, or even hate God-- You have never been alone, and never will be. No matter what you have done, God still wants to know&love you infinitely more than you want to know him.

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God GOES WITH YOU; he will never leave you nor forsake you." Deuteronomy 31:6
