Am I wasting my time with these feelings? The pressure's off now so I'm back on the ground. Too bad, I kind of liked it in the clouds with you. Because you take me away from everything and everyone, that's held me back for so long. Heaven for a few days, makes up for all the hell that life's dealt me, even now that's gone. It seems he's got your attention now, lucky guy. But isn't that the way it always ends? It seems he's got your attention just like you got mine. I'll express my feelings, then sit back and watch you walk away. You're beautiful in every way to me.

So this guy is speaking of an ex who's moved on but he's still in love with her. He loved being with her and it made his life worth it. Next guy that gets her is a lucky guy

this song is how all relationships should end in a way...with a guy finding someone new or a girl....idk, that way things arent so hard...and you'll always have those memories.and you'll always hold those memories.and youll always make new memories.

Eh, I kind of disagree actually.

This guy fell in love with this girl, she made him happy, and then the girl just goes off once some other guy, so the singer tells the girl he's going to tell her how much he loves her, but he knows that that's going to change crap, as she's just going to go after another guy, hence, "...and watch you walk away." He knows not even explaining to her his love will make her stay.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
