In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Just know
We are
A spec
In time.
So follow your bliss
And destroy the beauty
I'll lock myself alone in a room
Drink until the clock strikes noon
With just a pen, a pill, and some paper
And maybe I will write a sad song
Or another cliche poem
Of the person that I long to be
I wanna die like Jim Morrison
A fucking rock star
I wanna die like God on the cover of time.
Just a blink and it's gone
So baby pour some fame in my glass.
So kill the forest
And destroy the beauty.
I'll lock myself alone in a room
Drink until the clock strikes noon
With just a pen, a pill, and some paper
And maybe I will write a sad song
Or another cliche poem
Of the person that I long to be
(Colors blind)
The eyes
(Sounds deafen)
The ear
(Flavors numb)
The taste
(Thoughts weaken)
The mind
I'll attack someone with a switchblade knife
So that I can see their pain
I choose to be a serial killer
'Cause the victims don't get any fame.
I'll lock myself alone in a room
Drink until the clock strikes noon
With just a pen, a pill, and some paper
And maybe I will write a sad song
Or another cliche poem
Of the person that I long to be
Just know we are a spec in time

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
American Town

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
oh man, I love this song. The scream in the beginning is killer. I saw these guys last night. They get better every time I see them.
a fucking rockstar, i wanna die like one everytime..
couldn't have said it any better myself.
havent really looked at the rest of the posted lyrics but the second verse here actualy is: "I wanna die, like jim morsion, a fucking rock star.. I wanna die like god on the cover of time..." listen to it its right.
hey i saw them last night with tbs, ten, and chemical romance, and they are great, they play better everyday
This is a really great song, probably my favorite off the album, it's self explanatory.
calm the fuck down donut, christ quit reading so deep into shit. All i meant was that the lyrics are direct therefore it was self explanatory, jesus christ you fucking contradiction, you mock everyone for the love they have for a song then you go on to to say that its "hot like a pornstar" fucking idiot.
Between "Colors blind The eyes" and "Flavors numb The taste" there should be "Sounds deafen The ear"
he says jim morrison in the song...that makes that band fooking awesome, yo...
A-fucking-men to donutman.
a). This is called SONGMEANINGS.NET... not howmuchyoulovethissong.net
b). no one wants to hear your teeny fucking rants about how great they are and OMG i saw them 22987398475 times they they're soooo kewl!!!!
c). I agree with donut man as to what this song is about, but I take it in a slightly different view. I see it as: everyone who is in a band wants to have "fame" so to say, but "fame" nowadays is being an MTV bitch and bowing down to the masses and not doing what you want. So basically he's saying he wants fame, but not that shitty fame where you have to do everything "they" tell you, but basically, you won't get fame unless you DO do that, so it's all just a big contradiction. In the end he's saying instead of selling out, why not just kill someone, cause he'll get his fame then.
I personally find that this song is a metaphor for the sad state of the music industry today.
i think its about someone wanting so desparetely to be truly famous forever, someone who really wants 2 leave an impact on the world. and wants to be remembered
