In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
I went out walking the other day
Seen a little girl crying along the way
She'd been hurt so bad said she'd never love again
Some day your crying girl will end
And you'll find once again
Two hearts are better than one
Two hearts girl get the job done
Two hearts are better than one
Once I spent my time playing tough guy scenes
But I was living in a world of childish dreams
Someday these childish dreams must end
To become a man and grow up to dream again
I believe in the end
Two hearts are better than one
Two hearts girl get the job done
Two hearts are better than one
Sometimes it might seem like it was planned
For you to roam empty-hearted through this land
Though the world turns you hard and cold
There's one thing mister, that I know
That's if you think your heart is stone
And that you're rough enough to whip this world alone
Alone buddy there ain't no peace of mind
That's why I'll keep searching 'til I find my special one
Two hearts are better than one
Two hearts girl get the job done
Two hearts are better than one
Oh, two hearts are better than one
Two hearts girl get the job done
Two hearts are better than one
Whoa
Seen a little girl crying along the way
She'd been hurt so bad said she'd never love again
Some day your crying girl will end
And you'll find once again
Two hearts are better than one
Two hearts girl get the job done
Two hearts are better than one
Once I spent my time playing tough guy scenes
But I was living in a world of childish dreams
Someday these childish dreams must end
To become a man and grow up to dream again
I believe in the end
Two hearts are better than one
Two hearts girl get the job done
Two hearts are better than one

For you to roam empty-hearted through this land

That's if you think your heart is stone
And that you're rough enough to whip this world alone
Alone buddy there ain't no peace of mind
That's why I'll keep searching 'til I find my special one
Two hearts are better than one
Two hearts girl get the job done
Two hearts are better than one
Oh, two hearts are better than one
Two hearts girl get the job done
Two hearts are better than one
Whoa

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Just heard the acoustic version of this song... it is amazing, beautifully written song...

A brilliant song by the boss. A girl who has been so hurt by a previous relationship she doubts love and whether it can bring any good into her life again. Even after meeting someone new she still has the pain from the past
Love this rockin song. Good meaning. You'll find a good person to spend some time with in time! Don't listen to the naysayers, 2 hearts are better than 1!!!
“ Once I spent my time playing tough guy scenes But I was living in a world of childish dreams Someday these childish dreams must end To become a man and grow up to dream again I believe in the end “
Jeez, Bruce, we’re you WATCHING ME trying to become a man? Wow…
@force263 Anyway, the key line ( no, NOT, “key lime”, smartasses) to the song is:

“Someday these childish dreams must end,
To become a man and grow up TO DREAM AGAIN”

How many “mature adults” do you know who’ve maintained their sense of humor through it all? Did you ever get the feeling about some people, like that they realized the need to be mature, yet didn’t really understand the reason why “The World” or “Life” or whatever you wanna call it, Has to be the way it is, so cold and uncaring? Then there are those who seem to be able to just roll with the punches… I used to think that maybe It was just a question of “maturity”, but now I’m believing that it’s all about learning to Love yourself. And accomplishing that isn’t something you do through intestinal fortitude, as some seem to believe. It’s about Patience. And it’s about being Human, and being human is a very tricky business. We look around and think “this could all be Mine if I can just work hard enough”, while in our hearts/minds, we feel the need to “understand” the world AROUND us, while seeming to ignore the world WITHIN us, which, if we can never manage to understand THAT, will never allow the world AROUND us to seem like anything more than a Junglenir a War, something to “manage” or “deal with”, not find affinity with. When we can’t reach, or fathom, our heart, how can we ever possibly offer it to another? As another Rock N Roll great once sang:

“When some Cold tomorrow finds you
When some sad old dream reminds you
How the endless Road unwinds you

While you see a chance, take it.
Find romance, FAKE IT,
Because it’s all ON YOU.”
Song for pussies, basically
