In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
It is indeed a great song. I think it's about child abuse, and how the 'role model' was smashed. Now, the main character, likely the singer, is grown up, and suffering with the idea of feeling betrayed and stranded. Maybe someone else, though. This was just a cursory interpretation.
Disturbing lyrics but this song just sounds awesome.. And the guitars 2/3 through the song are just amazing! Very well-made song.
I think it's about a sexually abusive father (never wanted that intimacy). I'm sorry to point this out, but I think the line "And That I Can't Stand You Make Me Sick" is referring to anal sex so intense that the poor child can't walk. It's making a mash out of 3 phrases:
Very nice. I tend to agree it's about abuse. On a more personal note (because I've worked with battered children), I wish the singer would write a sequel where the once victim (actually always a victim unless and until s/he takes control) decides s/he is worthy of more and stands up to reclaim his/her life. For some, they break the cycle of abuse by getting counseling. (They like themselves enough to determine that they are worth a better life.) For others they grow up to model their parent's (abuser's) behavior, while others (often women, but men too) champion the victim status and walk the earth wounded. That open wound festers and claims even more victims....the abused him/herself; those who love the abused; even mere acquaintances of the abused. What annoys the heck out of me is that some who were abused (who suffered horrible abuse...often both sexual and physical...as well as emotional, which is always present) will be strong in so many aspects of their lives, yet not have the courage to go all the way to heal. Many see counseling/treatment as a weakness. They refuse to admit there is something wrong with them or the life they lead. It, I believe, is based on fear. Fear that they will not be successful. And yet these are the very same people who are so strong in other areas of their lives. They are walking contradictions, contradictions who make a choice not to have the best quality of life possible. And then, there are the abused who resort to manipulation to get what they want (ie people who they foolishing think will fill a void in their lives, not acknowledging that nobody can fill that void but their healthy selves). I've met my share of them.
