    General Comment'Likewise I said it first/Credit where it is due' I'm going to state the obvious and assume he was the first to say "I love you."

    'The true love in your eyes/Is stronger when they are closed'-- I remember reading an interview with Gary Lightbody about SP's Eyes Open, and he talked about the album's running theme of "eyes open" having to do with honesty b/c he feels truthfulness is found in another's eyes. Maybe his love for the subject is unrequited. She pretends to love him and says she does just to appease him. When her eyes are open and looking at him, he can tell that she doesn't return his love for her, but when her eyes are closed he can imagine her loving him as much.
