When I'm down on my luck
And I'm searching for my soul
When I'm feeling too much
And I start to lose control
When I'm down so low
That even enemies don't wanna know
You still care for me
Say a prayer for me
And I know

Ooh I like you hanging around
'Cause you lift me up when I am upside down
Ooh you are my favourite sound
'Cause you're always down for lifting me up
Like an angel when I hit the ground
Throw your arms all around me when I'm feeling down
Lift me up like an angel when I hit my low
When your arms are around me I don't wanna let you go

When I'm lost along the way
And I can't face another day
And if I stumble on the road
And if I can't carry a load
And if I lose my faith in kindness
And generosity
Would you hold my hand
Say you understand my pain

Ooh I like you hanging around
'Cause you lift me up when I am upside down
Ooh you are my favourite sound
'Cause you're always down for lifting me up
Like an angel when I hit the ground
Throw your arms all around me when I'm feeling down
Lift me up like an angel when I hit my low
When your arms are around me I don't wanna let you go

It's been a long hard road
And it's only just begun my friend and this time I know
You help me carry the load

'Cause you're always down for lifting me up
Like an angel when I hit the ground
Feel your arms all around me when I'm feeling down
Lift me up like an angel when I hit my low
When you're always around
You're my favourite sound
Lift me up like an angel when I hit the ground
Feel your arms all around me when I'm feeling down
Lift me up like an angel when I hit my low
When your arms are around me I don't wanna let you go
I don't wanna let you go
'Cause you lift me up now
Well you're always around
You're my favourite sound
Lift me up now
You lift me up
Lift me up now
Yeah you're always around
You're my favourite sound
Lift me up
Oh yeah

This is for my angel. He lifts me so when I am down. I love him very much.

Great song. Darren wrote this for the Backstreet Boys' new album, but they ended up not using it. Their mistake because this song is just so adorable. I believe the lyrics are pretty self-explanitory, and it's just so sweet. Just being appreciative of that someone in your life that it seems you couldn't go on without, because they help you so much and bring you everything you need in every sense of the word.

I didn't comment on this one lol. I remember listening to it in 2003 and thinking it was on the same line as "What You Like" and "Falling At Your Feet". Sweet adorable songs about a love that makes you feel good. Ahhh make me want to fall in love again... I love it when Darren talks about "It's been a long hard road, and it's only just began my friend..." I love it when he calls his lover "friend"...because that seems the way it was for him, from friends to lovers (What you like: "Never knew my journey began and ended with you my friend..."). Just like love should be...

YES! Wow, nailed it right there, again! You are amazing at this, or maybe we just have the exact same pattern of thinking! It is the most adorable and romantic thing in the whole world when he uses the word "friend" in his love songs.... I can't ever get enough of it. Makes me want to cry my eyes out because I want that kind of relationship so much.

haha...I feel you!!. I'm dying for that kind of relationship as well...I am guessing you have the same "issue" as me, maybe guys are attracted to you physically first and that's when they stop, they don't try to go deeper. And we both wish we had someone who would really like to be there all the time and help us, to make our days brighter and worth-living. A reason to smile after a bad day.

It will surely come Miss :) You're so young and nice. You just have to be sure your eyes are open and you're ready as well :) .

    My Interpretation

though i agree with most of the comments about darren thinking of his lovers as 'friends,' i also think he probably uses that word (early on before he came out) so as not to distinguish between male or female. you'll notice that he rarely ever uses female pronouns. i don't think he wanted to use the word 'she' or 'her' because then he would be lying about who he is, but he couldn't use 'he' or 'him' because he hadn't come out yet.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
