Steven Wilson – Transience Lyrics 1 year ago
Sounds like it is about sexual abuse (as many songs on HCE are, including the title). There are also undertones of a mother's denial. Filigree circles sounds like something a young girl would not usually have unless they were being groomed by someone who sees them as their intimate. It is too fine of jewelry for a young wrist. The cycle of abuse ("it's only the start") and the way abuse follows someone their entire life.

Steven Wilson – To the Bone Lyrics 6 years ago
Very inaccurate lyrics but to be fair, the lyrics are very hard to hear correctly. Here are the lyrics straight from the To the Bone Deluxe Edition book.

Hold on, down and deeper down we're going
Way down through the floor
Oh, don't you wanna see what's at the core?

Truth is the icy clear stream we dream about drinking from
But it will liquidate liars should they rewire its smiling bomb

Hold on, down and down and down and down we're melting
down their throne
Oh, down through every superstition, virgin, whore and crone
Hold on, down through all the fear gods to the very truth alone
Oh, down and down we're going to the bone

Truth is the permanent path we laugh about, but then avoid
Thinking we all know the way, we stray behind, self destroyed

Hold on, down and down and down and down, we're drilling
through their stone
Oh, down through every fairy story built to keep us prone
Hold on, down through every government with gun and
guided drone
Oh, down and down we're going to the bone

Rain on me, rain on me, to me, to me, to me

Rain all the truth down, down on me
Rain down so much you make a sea, you make a sea
A sea we can sail then sink like a stone
Down to the truth, down to the bone, down to the bone

Steven Wilson – 3 Years Older Lyrics 7 years ago
My favorite line is

You stand there with the other fuckers in the rain
Life is not some sinecure for you to pay
You have to pay

It's pretty clear the meaning. We can't expect life to be good for free.

@[PeteBurns:4694] Are you kidding me? The lyrics are BEAUTIFUL! Billy is is one of the best songwriters in music!

In appears, people really have different views of what "good lyrics" are. Also, mystery sky is for concept not character

Steven Wilson – No Twilight Within The Courts Of The Sun Lyrics 10 years ago
Wow guys! Look what I found.

The title of this song is taken from David Bedford's album The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Part 1. I was listening to Steven's favorite concept albums and this was one of them. It's at the very end at about minute 20. I couldn't believe it when I heard it and the lyrics go

Death and Life-in-Death have diced for the ship's crew,
and she (the latter) winneth the ancient Mariner.
No twilight within the courts of the Sun.
At the rising of the Moon,
One after another,
His shipmates drop down dead.

This is the only place you can read the lyrics in full.

This may have to do with Steven stealing idea's? I'm curious why he would put this out there for his fans to know he steals ideas.Granted the lyrics are very original.

I don't agree with the comment below. I think the lyrics are great. Wilson never fails at lyrics.I really connect with the line "you can pretend that I don't exist for you" . He says FOR YOU. When you're in love or have feelings for someone strongly, sometimes you'll unknowingly hold them responsible for your emotions and your happiness. They eventually broke for whatever reason. Maybe these two lived in the same town at one point and they both came home for Christmas and he called her to see if she wanted to get together and she knew he'd do this and she didn't respond.

It's just incredibly heart-wrenching.

The gorgeous ambient sounds in this song are probably the most beautiful sounds my ears will ever hear.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time. It's sad no one has commented on this yet.

It could be about a woman leaving his husband.
I tried to find a relation between the "Saint Rose" in this song and there is a Saint Rose that existed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_of_Lima

Saint Rose of Lima was the first person born in the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic Church. If anyone can shed any light on how she could be related to this song, please do.

Steven Wilson – Abandoner Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this about the intense emotions, cold feelings and thoughts of someone who just experienced a loved ones suicide. The other being their loved who they felt were their other half. You can no longer see or hear someone who is dead so it is kind of a play in the dark. The speaker here talks about a rope that they used to tie themselves meaning committed suicide. It's abandonment through suicide.

I recently read the lyrics to this and discovered it somewhat biographical for the phase of life I'm in now and kind of crazy how much things sync. As an earlier poster said, this sounds like someone who's recovering from opiate addiction which I am. What's so freakishly cool is the "sickly pink liquid that puts me to sleep" which is the suboxone I take to stop withdrawl and reduce cravings. Suboxone is a pink orangeish fluid when absorbed in your mouth and it puts me to sleep easily and used by recovering opiate addicts. I fall asleep listening to this song. My curtains are always closed. Still, the sound of the street and outside life makes me wish I was well enough to go out and socialize. But I don't think I am quite there yet.

Steven Wilson – Salvaging Lyrics 11 years ago
I am going to post the correct lyrics right here because people keep changing them above when they don't have any sources except their ears which misleads people into interpretations based on incorrect lyrics. I know these are 100% accurate because they come from two sources directly from the man who wrote it. That is, the bonus footage on the Insurgentes DVD where Steven is shown writing most of the lyrics on a girl's back and the Insurgentes deluxe book which has the rest written in it. These are the correct lyrics:

What was the point
of making me trust?
You live in a lie,
it's a pain in the dust.
God always shouts
and you always kick.
Through passionless eyes,
yeah, you make me feel sick.
A secret is told
but the body rejected.
A smile's a question
but the end is expected.
A truce is attained,
excuses are given.
Time to assess,
now the nails have been driven.

I agree with DJpyro because Steven Played around with the lyrics a lot before he made the offical version. In the GFD book, he has written down but somewhat crossed out "I haven't even got the will to eat, does that sound like one of those emo creeps?"

Insurgentes limited book says "What was the point of making ME trust." I always heard that and it makes more sense anyway. Also, "a secret is told" is correct. That's extremely important.

In the Grace for Drowning book, there's a man laying on the kitchen floor, a bottle and a bunch of pills on floor to his side.

So I also believe this song is about someone who lost someone and eventually became so depressed, the person turned to suicide.

I don't think this is auto-biographical but it seems like Steven wanted to write a song that his depressed or suicidal fans could relate to. And then thought it would be nice to include a radio-friendly song on the album which doesn't have many radio-friendly songs at all and use that as a single. It's a beautiful song. Steven's music has really helped through the really tough stuff I've gone through these past couple months.

Steven Wilson – Sign o' the Times (Prince cover) Lyrics 11 years ago
This cover is so good but why oh why does there have to be that big, long brick of distortion towards the end of the song!?!? It would be one of the best cover songs ever if it weren't for that! I just dont get it. Besides for that, Steven Wilson's vocals are great reminising Prince's. And that awesome heavy guotar part is great.

Steven Wilson – Raider II Lyrics 11 years ago
Just kidding. This song is about robbery. The raider is a robber. He punches the owner of the home with his fist. He cuts the phone line so the owner can't raise alarm and then he ties the owner up with tape and when he's done with the stressful first part of the robbery,he relaxes for a bit and watches some TV while the owner is tied up and talking too much like "please let me go, please don't hurt me" etc. The next part sounds like he's really searching for something, through the trash, the floorboards and all. Then he needs to check to make sure he hasn't left any finger prints. It sounds like he can't find what he broke in for as if it was just for attention. Now the ending seems like he has to kill this owner and clear the air. I really think the fact he's referring to himself as a raider instead of robber means he was searching for something in particular. He's a plaque inside this owners home and disorganizes everythinf this person owns. This song is rather violent for the album. It kind of reminds me of the serial killer concept of In Absentia. The Grace for Drowning book has a picture of a person tied up close to thw lyrics of this song but the other pictures next to it, I can't quite make sense of. Also, I wanted to point out the song Index is kind of similar to the compulsion of thia robber or raider. I think Index and his song may be connected. I'm not sure what this has to do with Grace for Drowning as a whole but every song seems to be different on this album. Brilliant song. If anyone has anymore odeas or can add on to this a interpretation, please post. I'd really like to know hat that fibres between the teeth line means.

It could also be about being dumped. In his book, Steven gave us the lyrics to one line that people have been debating for a while. It's "A plague in the dark whines like dogs." So at least that's cleared up.
