Salvaging Lyrics

What was the point of making me trust,
You live in a lie, the pain in the dust.

God always shouts and you always kick,
Through passionless eyes.
Yeah you make me feel sick.

Your secret is taught but the body rejected.
Your smile's a question but the end is expected.

A truce is obtained, excuses are given.
Time to assess, now the nails have been driven.

Time to assess, now the nails have been driven.
Time to assess, now the nails have been driven.

I hear the first line as:

'What was the point of making you trust?'

but other than that, it sounds correct. Thanks! I've been trying to firgure out some of the lyrics for this song for a while.

After paging through my copy of the photobook, I've realized that "Now the nails have been driven" follows "...Time to assess" rather than the 'dreaming' line.

Insurgentes limited book says "What was the point of making ME trust." I always heard that and it makes more sense anyway. Also, "a secret is told" is correct. That's extremely important.

I am going to post the correct lyrics right here because people keep changing them above when they don't have any sources except their ears which misleads people into interpretations based on incorrect lyrics. I know these are 100% accurate because they come from two sources directly from the man who wrote it. That is, the bonus footage on the Insurgentes DVD where Steven is shown writing most of the lyrics on a girl's back and the Insurgentes deluxe book which has the rest written in it. These are the correct lyrics:

What was the point of making me trust? You live in a lie, it's a pain in the dust. God always shouts and you always kick. Through passionless eyes, yeah, you make me feel sick. A secret is told but the body rejected. A smile's a question but the end is expected. A truce is attained, excuses are given. Time to assess, now the nails have been driven.

Just a correction: it's "now the nails have been driven", not "now who knows what you're dreaming". This is one of the few lines written in the Insurgentes book, so I thought it would have been helpful to put them here to understand the whole song, while waiting for official lyrics on the website. Thank you very much for the other lines anyway!

I've always heard the fourth line "Through pasionless hours" as "Through pasionless eyes", but I could be wrong. Great job on the rest of the song. I had problems deciphering the beginning of the third line, but that sounds spot on!

I think this song is about someone Steven Wilson knows who is trying to salvage their life. This person lives in a lie where he pretends to be happy but he really just sort of lives, without passion and happiness. Wilson and this person assess whether or not he can be saved but "the nails have been driven". It's too late.

"What was the point of making you trust? You live in a lie, the pain in the dust." -Wilson has been trying to help him, he trusts him but it is pointless if he does nothing to himself. He lives in a lie and the pain comes from the dust, from the lack of change.

"God always shouts and you always kick, through passionless hours. Yeah you make me feel sick." -I'm pretty sure it's hours. I'm not sure about the God part but this guy is resisting help and it makes Wilson sick.

"Your secret is taught but the body rejected." Wilson reveals to the man the secret that has been destroying him but he rejects it.

"Your smile's a question but the end is expected." Every time he smiles, he is putting up a front so people must always question if he is actually happy. The end is expected because if he makes any progress (he smiles) he reverts and falls apart again.

"A truce is obtained, excuses are given." They stop fighting, Wilson is probably through dealing with this guy. He doesn't want help.

"Time to assess, now the nails have been driven. It's hard to assess, now the nails have been driven. It's time to assess, now the nails have been driven." Wilson assesses the situation. It's too late. This person has driven the nails into the proverbial coffin and buried himself. He is lost.
