I have agonised and agonised over the first line of the second verse...

I think it might be:
"Buy the watercolour dry"
but I am far from certain.

Please suggest any corrections! I am pretty sure on most of the lyrics, but I cannot tell what on earth he's rambling on about in the final part...

Terrific song, there's so many themes woven together. The chorus seems to be about someone close to him with some kind of mental disorder; either depression or maybe something like schizophrenia. I'm not really sure how this ties together with the hedonism of the song's opening lyrics, the random pirate-themed penultimate verse, or the stream-of-consciousness of the final part. As ever with him, I suspect they are themes and narratives culled from literature he enjoys, I wonder if anyone has suggestions as to what those pieces might be!

I have problems construing this song as anything but anti-faith and anti-religion, even though there are plenty of people here that would disagree with me about that, so I guess it's the cynical lens that I'm looking through! :)

I would argue that the song is talking about religious belief as a cause of (or at least an excuse for) global conflict. Particularly lines like "It's a Bible or a bullet they put over your heart | It's getting harder and harder to tell them apart." The extended poker metaphor appears to be central to that; just as they do with gambling, people get almost hypnotised by the language and imagery of religion ("In Royal City I fell into a trance") and they fall into the trap of aspiring to something that is virtually impossible - a Royal Flush - or the idea of God and Heaven. I think Ritter sympathises with the religious people that fall for the gambler's fallacy ; "Oh it's hell to believe there ain't a hell of a chance."

I would suggest he's saying that only by aiming for something more realistic ("Only a full house going to make it through") and grounded in rationality, will we start to avoid the conflicts he describes so vividly in the verse beginning "I became a thin blue stream". The full house metaphor takes on an interesting double-meaning, becoming almost a pun for the unity that we would all enjoy if we could only put the notion of religion aside.

The ideal world he goes on to depict in the final verse is one that is free of such delusions ("I stopped looking for royal cities in the air"), and accordingly it is utopian. "Heaven" and "Angels" are ironically able to exist on earth because the conflicts created by religion are absent. The line "Heaven is so big there ain't no need to look up" would seem to suggest that the very thing religion promises us after we die is right here in front of us now, and if people could appreciate that, the world would more akin to the idyllic place he describes.

Whatever it means though, and I'm still not certain, this is just an amazing piece of lyric-writing. They would make for a beautiful poem if taken away from the music (which I also love, don't get me wrong). Incredible use of imagery and themes, and so thought-provoking... makes you nauseous when you think about how meaningless and intellectually-barren commercial music is by comparison.

I think I <3 Josh Ritter!

David Ford – Panic (Dirt & Matchwood) Lyrics 14 years ago
He said a few words by means of introduction before he performed it when I saw him last (his most-recent Bristol gig); about how the media and current political climate is all geared towards creating 'panic' and his own confusion as to how much of it is genuinely worth our fear and how much of it is designed to enable the government to erode civil liberties.

From the lyrics though, I agree it does seem to be a real mish-mash of broader grievances with society that he has. Great polemic, even if we can't be sure what it's about! xD

Also, purely for bragging rights, I got to play along with him on A Short Song About Shoes that night by strumming a Washboard! Giggity :D

someone being negative would say this is completely the same as State of the Union in lyrical style and composition... but dammit i do not care! What a fantastic song, I love it when he's all acerbic.

Muse – Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption) Lyrics 14 years ago
if you don't think a rock band writing a symphony isn't ostentatious, what adjective would you use?

you seem to have myopicly latched onto the negative connotations of the word I used, when it was clearly intended as praise.

Go find someone else to flame :)

Muse – Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption) Lyrics 14 years ago
It just boggles the mind that there is a band out there on a major label, making popular music that dares to have this level of artistic vision and sheer ambition. Even though a band writing a symphony is pretentious in the extreme, this is phenomenal stuff, you have to take your hat off to it.
