This is another song by the Bauhaus that is somewhat gibberish to me as far as lyrics go. I love how it sounds though; kind of like a tribute to maybe surf rock/swing, with some dark undertones per usual of the band.
If I had to guess as to what it's about, I would say it is about some girl trying to get somewhere in the world and the narrator singing the song wants her to stay where she is, perhaps her significant other. |

mayabreathscolors, you are probably the most "intelligent" person on this "thread". there is no such thing as universally bad or good art, it all comes down to taste, making artsluts comment futile.
as for your comparison to hitler, it was flawless. both men were artists before they were "morally distorted". they always believed, as far as we can tell, that they were doing the right thing. their past however, clouded them and changed them into something "wicked".

this song always gives me chills. heathen is one of my favourite david bowie albums because of songs like this, he really broke through with this one.
whenever i hear it i always think of a few people left over from an apocalypse type situation looking for more survivors. [everything has changed, in your fear seek only peace/love, ect]

one of Bowie's best written songs, and my personal favourite off space oddity. to me it sounds like a story, or a piece of history that never happened between two forces, one, a god-like man that believed, trusted, and helped mankind, the other, mankind as a whole, namely the majority that used up the god mans powers for their own joy, forcing it down those who didnt believe what they believed's throats [we can force you to be free and we can force you to believe]
the narrator could be bowie or the god man [or perhaps theyre one in the same ;D] or it could be the minority of mankind that lived thru whatever happened. it seems that the narrator desperately wants to go back and change what happened, or at least believe what the majority believed was good.
that's just my take on it tho, it seems very story-esque to me. i love long songs that tell tales =] my favourite part is when the narrator recalls and quotes the book "in which the lovers were slain", its beautiful the way he puts so much passion into that part.
I agree with hairyliberal's synopsis of the song tho, i just wasnt born in the 60s, so i cant really relate unfortunately. |

me and my friends made a music video for this song once. it had a girl and a guy in a dark basement like room, the girl is sitting in a chair and had a revolver and one bullet on a table. the guy [dressed to be MM] could either be viewed either as a narrator, or egging the girl on to kill herself [as many people describe him to be like]. there were supposed to be flash backs of some other stuff to add dramatics to it, but we never finished it... |

I saw an interview with pete saying it was written out of anger at his family for sending him to rehab, jail, and the psych ward. someone in agonizing pain, this is just expression. we all have moments in our lives that we just want to scream and tear away at our flesh until we feel better. unfortunatly that doesnt help, whether metaphorical or litterally. but just maybe, listening to a song like this and understanding someone elses pain can help us understand ourselves and breath knowing that we are not alone.

quite possibly my favourite song by nin... yeah no joke
its funny, i had similar thoughts about life a few months before i first heard this. or was it weeks...
anyway, i would love to believe this. i hope i can some day, its sort of tough tho... depending on how you look at it that is. for some, thinking this way is easy. for example, its pretty easy to Create a god to govern you. technically, arent you governing yourself in the end? people have twisted that and taken controle of that thought, its pretty tough to do that to this tho. the only person that can really controle you is you, without the use of chemicals that is.

im curious to know if this theory has a name tho. surly it isnt atheism, considering this thought makes us think we are an immortal being therefore when we die we just... perhaps make up another life? continue it thru someone else? we wont know until it happens, its agonizing.
but if we created the world, why do we suffer? perhaps we know that we would be bored otherwise. or maybe, and this is a negative way of looking at things, we hate ourselves and want us to suffer. this would explain a lot, why things happen in the time and fashion that they do.
there are examples, but im sure you can figure that out.

to me at least, this song is pretty straight foreward. either extream dislike for someone else, or yelling this song at the mirror works
