PJ Harvey – The Glorious Land Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think this is about the bombing of Japan at the close of WW2 I believe. It reminds me of Grave of the Fireflies, a film about two children struggling to survive in wartime Japan. That or just the perspective of the locals in a country being invaded by neo-colonial powers, like America and England. American interventionism often exploits those being invaded, stripping them of their culture, and ability to be a contender in the world economy. They are forced to exploit their own children to survive. |
PJ Harvey – The Words That Maketh Murder Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I would also like to add that war tribunals are incredibly biased to a) the winners of war, and b) to who ever will profit more. It's really not about "justice" |
PJ Harvey – The Words That Maketh Murder Lyrics | 11 years ago |
The words that maketh murder alludes to the saying "the pen is more dangerous than the sword". This is because the people who decide whether they will send their soldiers to war or not are the ones with the pens. The sword does what the pen has written it will do. "What if I take my problem to the United Nations" is ironic, and smugly criticizing that the united nations is actually not there to stop "the words that maketh murder".... she repeats the question, with no answer. Which tells you a lot. The words that maketh murder, are the words of the soldiers. "I've seen and done things I want to forget" |
PJ Harvey – The Guns Called Me Back Again Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I think this song is about someone dealing with PTSD, and PJ Harvey decided to use the imagery of war to illustrate. |
Awolnation – Sail Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Bathtub scene, have you ever seen the Minority Report? Because that's what I thought of when I saw this video. He's clearly just incredibly paranoid. Or instead of "refusing to go into the light", he's trying to maintain a grip on himself. |
Awolnation – Sail Lyrics | 12 years ago |
You're fanatical, I think. |
Awolnation – Sail Lyrics | 12 years ago |
"I have to listen more closely" lol typical ADD |
Awolnation – Sail Lyrics | 12 years ago |
hmm No, I think there is a very dissociative theme. His tone is very paranoid, anxious, and stressed. Many people who have ADHD also have underlying problems/ disorders. I think the song is more about the frustration and stress that comes with being depressed and not being able to connect. The actual words he is using are more abstract - he is not speaking literally, just addressing the mental and emotional anguish. A lot of what he is saying is actually quite disjointed, which can happen when you suffer from emotional turbulence (anxiety disorders, schizotypal disorders, waves of depression, etc.) With the repetition of stressing that he's "blaming it on [his] ADD", he highly contrasts this with an equally stressed, but eerily soothing "SAIL". In repeating the word "sail", it's almost like a dissociation from reality. His reality is living with constant paranoia, and rigid agitation - which after a while can separate the body from the mind (temporarily of course, I'm speaking in terms of the process of anxiety attacks.) |
R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics | 12 years ago |
also, losing grip on something. Coming to terms with not being in control of a situation - like that initial feeling of holding onto something even though you don't believe it, but you want to so badly that it frustrates you. |
R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I think this song is about doubting yourself, or second-guessing. I think that's a huge concern with people who are religious - always fighting doubt within themselves. It's sad really, and horrifying to think, in that person's position what they value and love the most in their life may not even be real. And having that thought at the back of your mind would cause stress. |
Talking Heads – Lifetime Piling Up Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I actually have really bad anxiety, like it's debilitating.. and can completely relate to this song. lol especially the first line. I'm not saying marijuana is bad, but whenever I smoke weed I like to be alone in my house, watching documentaries on alien conspiracies, lol. I think weed is really overrated and I highly doubt this song is about "a drug trip". He could be talking about his memories from his lifetime "I can see my lifetime piling up - a hundred floors below me." But to me, the words that he is using actually are a good description of how anxiety controls you, and how a panic attack just hits you. What I find especially interesting is: "cry cry cry/ it's just you and i/ like an automobile/ with no one at the wheel/ spinning out of control/ we're all over the road/ in our sexy machine/ all the passengers scream/ scream scream" Now if you notice, the beginning he is saying "cry cry cry" but by the end of it, he's evolved the emotion from just an unpleasant feeling, to a hysterical one.. and on a timeline. Also, when writers use words like "like", or "as" - these are similes. So I assume that he is describing his experience by relating it to a car out of control. Now I don't know if he meant to do this on purpose or not, but the car analogy is so redundant and plain. Perhaps he decided to use this analogy because of its overuse. Just a thought. Also, "reaching from my bedroom to the stars" relating this back to anxiety again, I often spend a lot of time in my room trying to manically plan my future, or fix my present, just by thinking. and it's funny because my bedroom is where I feel most safe, and as if I can get to my destination from my room, simply by obsessively planning and thinking until it happens. "pilin' those house up/ pilin' them higher, higher, higher" When he is talking about houses, I have two thoughts: 1. people's lives and experiences are shaped by by heredity and environment. We spend most of our early lives in our homes creating our experiences, learning our behaviours, etc. So I think he could be referring to the idea that "pile" their experiences up, manifest them into problems, i.e., mental disorders like anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, schizotypal, ocd, etc. (yes, a lot of this is chemical, but there are learned behaviours within them). It's like we compile and suppress everything. And I think that's what this is all really about. the 2nd thing I wanted to mention was simply that the repetition could be referring to the looping thoughts/ repeating thoughts, that people who do have anxiety suffer from. Anyways, that's just my take. Love the band, love the songs. |
The Magnetic Fields – You Must Be Out Of Your Mind Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think this song is actually about a fling that he had with a GUY. Since he is GAY and writes music about MEN. |
CocoRosie – Honey or Tar Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song actually reminds me of Aubrey Beardsley. |
Arcade Fire – Ready to Start Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It would fit seeing how "suburbs" is the theme here. I can really identify with this song. It's like growing out of youth into adulthood and living in the adult world. Life through the eyes of a teenager is very beautiful. You can do anything and reach for the stars, no one is stopping you. But when you grow up you realize that life is not what you thought it was AT ALL. You are not as entitled as you think you are. You are pretty much at the bottom. I really feel that this song is about "coming to terms with what your life actually is". It's like a realization, like "oh, now I'm ready to start". |
Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Pretty sure "sleep" is a metaphor actually. |
Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #2 (Laika) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I definitely think it has to do with the Russians. But I think it is actually about Alexander, Vladimir Lenin's older brother. He was considered a terrorist by the Russian government and executed. His death had a profound influence on Lenin. "They should have named you Laika" could be a comparison in similarity. Laika was sent to space for a Russian mission, while Alexander tried to start a revolution through violence, and was later imprisoned, murdered and forgotten. "When daddy comes home you always start a fight" could refer to the fundamental disagreement in the Ulianov family. That's just what I feel anyways. |
Fleet Foxes – Anyone Who's Anyone Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song totally reminds me of a this guy I know... |
The National – Slow Show Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I get this feeling that he is creating this fantasy about someone he knows and loves... but has never actually had a relationship with this person. It just seems so distant, like there is no actual connection between the two people physically, but there is emotionally. |
The National – Friend of Mine Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I agree with the idea that the narrator is selfish. I think that the narrator has grown apart from a seriously close friend, and is hurt, or jealous about this "balloon man" .. As for the "balloon man", I think that the narrator is describing him as such because he doesn't know, or care to know this person. It just shows how he values "John's" new friend. |
Kate Havnevik – Timeless Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I am getting "Timeless; Love is a cure" as a tattoo, rib cage. This is my favourite song, and by Kate. She is amazing! |
Chad Vangaalen – City of Electric Light Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"I thought you were the moon in the sky, But it turns out you were just a street light" His initial impression of someone was that this person was a natural, down to earth, beautiful person. He then figures out that this person is actually a synthetic and fake person. Humans create street lights. This person was created, shaped and molded by others... and hasn't their own impression on anything. He is disappointed in this person, let down. That is my take on it anyhow. |
Kate Havnevik – You Again Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think that this song is more about her fantasizing about someone she has feelings for.. |
TV on the Radio – DLZ Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think he is talking about "Death". Since being a professor is to know or claim at being an expert on a certain subject. I think this song is about how humanity no longer respects death. "nevermind, death professor" it sounds like he is dismissing Death. And how we are distancing our selves from nature, almost becoming alien to our own environment. |
Three Days Grace – Take Me Under Lyrics | 14 years ago |
suicide. |
System of a Down – Science (feat. Arto Tunçboyacıyan) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think they are talking about morals and ethics. Science can give us many things... but at what cost? We whore our souls for science. |
Oceanlab – Sky Falls Down (Vocals by Justine Suissa) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think it has dual meanings, actually. I agree with you though... I love hearing this song when I am just about to peak. But I also think that this song has a lot to do with love. "I love you until the sky falls down." It doesn't get any more self-explanatory than this. Haha, I have also been in situations where I just feel this insanely deep connection with a cuddle-buddy while high as a kite. You just love everything that is wonderful... and appreciate it so much more when rolling. |
Way Out West – Don't Forget Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think the line: "Before I walk away against my will" has to do with something that she is not in control of. So in that sense, I agree with whoever thinks this song is about death. In relationships, you make choices... you are always in control. But when someone dies, you can't control the situation. I donno. |
Pink Floyd – Run Like Hell Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song reminds me of the British National Party (BNP). |
Tears for Fears – Mothers Talk Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Read "When the Wind Blows". As stated in the above comment. It's quite disturbing. |
Thom Yorke – Hearing Damage Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"you wish you felt better, But at least you can do no wrong in my eyes." it's like he understands what this person is going through, but doesn't care... as long as he gets emotional stimulation from this person. Throughout this song Thom is disassociating the way the person feels from how he feels. Like, well, you feel like shit and you are in pain but whatever. |
Imogen Heap – Glittering Cloud Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this song actually reminded me of people like Lindsay Lohan. You know, like, alcoholic kids in the spotlight. aha...that's just what it reminds me of. |
Peter Gabriel – Shock The Monkey Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Media dictates the way people in today's society think. Sex sells, didn't you know? I am not saying that I agree with this song being about masturbation. However, I do agree with Putinsolitary in regard to hedonism. Monkeys are lower on the evolution scale... yet we can be compared to the animalistic behaviour, or hedonistic pleasure of a monkey. |
The Mountain Goats – No Children Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I sort of agree.. I think the reason the song is called no children is because either the wife or the husband can't have children. So, the other person is resentful toward them. And it seems that as the years pass, they gradually being to really hate each other, to the point where they both want each other to die. |
Cat Stevens – How Can I Tell You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
When I first heard this song, I cried. Cat knows how it is. |
Interpol – C'mere Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I feel a little the same. However, I think it is about two people who have feelings for each other - but one of them is in another relationship. I think the girl is in this other relationship out of convenience. I do think you are right about the waking up in the night, dreaming about her part. It is really in the first line: "It's way too late to be this locked inside ourselves." This could be relating to him keeping this need for her a secret, and not letting it be known. Now it is too late and she is in a different relationship and he knows it should be him... but it's not. Tough luck. |
Tori Amos – Winter Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It is most definitely between a father and his daughter. I think it is just the outline of their life. From when she is young and holding her father's hand outside in the winter cold. I noticed that she uses seasons to transition through phases of her life. That is also my favourite line "When you gonna love you as much as I do?" Since we all seem to be hard on ourselves and feel that we are imperfect... our parents have always said (well mine, from experience) that we are perfect. I know when I was going through my teenage years that my mother would be heartbroken when I would look in front of the mirror and cry and throw a fit about how I was "ugly" (<--- not up to 'media standards' beautiful). Every time I hear that line, it hurts. |
Crystal Castles – Untrust Us Lyrics | 14 years ago |
That's funny you say that because Alice is a fucking GACK HEAD. |
LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Well, I think your opinion may change when you hear the voice on the other end of the line telling you that someone you love dies. Because he is totally right, you know something is wrong by the way the person is acting or breathing or whatever, but to actually hear that so-and-so has passed away is just like getting hit by a ton of bricks. |
LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yeah, I am pretty sure that once the person you love is dead, it is extremely difficult to start all over. |
Engine Room – A Perfect Lie Lyrics | 14 years ago |
It seems that the repetition is important... like, everything that anyone would see about a particular person, they would be envious because that person has it all. But, it is really only a superficial existence. The person outwardly portrays that they are perfect... and perfection in so many ways, that they actually are just ugly on the inside. |
Peter Blood – You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I first heard this song on an episode of Moral Orel. I love it. |
Kings of Leon – Closer Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Please don't imply that Twilight will ever become a classic. Twilight is not literature, it is mindless drivel. |
Rodriguez – Sugar Man Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I'm in Canada and I know who he is. |
Rodriguez – I Wonder Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This song is so amazing! I love Rodriguez. |
Kings of Leon – Closer Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Stephanie Myers is a bad person. I don't think I would be very happy if my little sister picked up any of her books-she's in grade 7. Seriously, that woman is a terrible writer and I really hate that she influences so many young, impressionable, and potential writers. Drop Myers and pick up Orwell or something. |
Lykke Li – I'm Good I'm Gone Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Aries. That's all I have to say. |
White Lies – E.S.T. Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Throughout the entire song, the narrator is going from reality to fantasy (or an illusion); as he repeatedly says: "If you tell me to jump then I'll die" -reality "In my dreams I'm there" -fantasy "I always hoped that I'd learn how to fly" -reality "In my dreams I'm there" -fantasy So, the narrator, I believe, is in a mental institution (like the one in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.) When the narrator says "If you tell me to jump then I'll die" I think he is saying that his life in in someone else's hands. Then says "In my dreams I'm there" I think he is alluding to where he thinks he is going after he dies. Although, I think when he says this line, it is a drug induced illusion of where he thinks he is going. "You can tie my hands to the walls But you can't tie my dreams to this place" The first line is an analogy. When he says "walls", he is referring to the foundation that is keeping him from fulfilling his dreams (as he said before: I always hoped that I'd learn to fly - this is the narrator defying the laws that govern humanity. i.e, going beyond the walls of what we build our principles and fundamentals on.) The second line is the narrator saying that he will not give in to being reintegrated into society, even if the people who are controlling him do preform EST. He would rather die than give into the "social norm" (which is a seriously fucked up concept.) "I might fall like a rock from your heart But you won't see me fall from grace" I think he switches to the illusions ... or perhaps memories in his head. I think the narrator was in love with someone. I think that the person he was in love with was there with him before he was admitted to the asylum. Perhaps there with him for a long time and finally there was a breaking point. So the person that he was in love with, he feels like they just dropped him like a stone, as if he was never really important to them. So he bites back by saying (in a spiteful way) "But you won't see me fall from grace". I think here he is saying: "yeah, thanks for fucking me over in here; I'm not crazy, I am just severely depressed by this shock of you just dumping me in a mental bin. Now I have nothing to live for, I want you to watch me die, or at least, I will scar you by killing myself and it's your fault." That's my take on that. "Fate always loses hold" -changing his destiny; he is going to kill himself before the doctors and nurses do. "Like electric sparks in my heart" -alluding to EST "Fate always loses hold" "Now be a good girl and do what you're told" -spitefully saying, be naive and do what the people who hold control tell you to do. "I leave my memoirs in blood on the floor And my fears with the nurse on the stairs" Well, we all know what a memoir is and when he says that he is writing them in his blood on the floor, I am pretty sure that means that he is writing in his blood. When he says, "And my fears with the nurse on the stairs," I think that his fears are actually drugs. Perhaps liquid LSD, doctors used to test it out on mental patients back in the 30's. And it is the nurse that was bringing him his dose. "I'm only going where you'll be some day" Well, since he killed himself, and that is a sin, I think he is referring to hell. He is also talking about the person who had left him, and broke his heart... betrayed him. He is obviously not very forgiving of this, and curses the person who left him by saying that what they did to him is equally as bad as him killing himself. "So don't say, 'Rest In Peace' in your prayers" Again, he is saying, he isn't in a pleasant place, and he doesn't want the person who betrayed him to be in a very nice place either. "I hope you, remember me I hope you, never pretend for me I hope you, remember me I hope you" There is the importance of repetition. "I hope you, remember me" is him telling the person he loved, as he lay dying, that he doesn't want them to forget that the reason he killed himself was because he couldn't handle being in the asylum any longer. And the very reason that he was in the asylum was because of the betrayal of the person he loved. As for the "never pretend for me", I think he is telling said person he loved that he doesn't want them to pretend that they still loved him, after all that happened. So as to just save face. Anyways, that's my take on this haunting song. |
Oceanlab – Satellite (Vocals by Justine Suissa) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Just because this songs sounds good when you are on drugs, doesn't mean it is about drugs. When I heard this song I felt that the line: "You pray to me, your lucky star, your singing satellite" is actually about someone who is just a normal person who is obsessed with a celebrity. If you think about it, a satellite is often mistaken for a star in the night sky. Although, when I roll, I feel a more intense connection to this song that is out of this world deep. Like, the only thing that matters in that moment is me and the person standing next to me and the music... |
CocoRosie – South 2nd Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Nelly Furtado – wait for you Lyrics | 15 years ago |
