Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band – Big Eyed Beans from Venus Lyrics 17 years ago
This song has, without doubt, the best guitar work you'll ever hear on record. It's delta blues from another dimension,a nd if you don't dance you're probably dead inside.

Songs rings with a desire for alien abduction.
Beefheart isn't really about lyrics- they're more like background dadaist poetry, but goddman if he doesn't pull out some great lines and phrases.

Fugazi – Waiting Room Lyrics 17 years ago
Fugazi are punk. That's it.

It's a great call-to-arms to stop wallowing in apathy and make change. They couldn't have had a better start as a band.

Fugazi – Do You Like Me Lyrics 17 years ago
Ha, this song sums-up puberty for me completely.

The song swings between unrequited high-school crushs (and the 'I guess' apathy) and teenage concern and anger over politics (Lockheed), but after all, like in high school.

The tune, like a teenager, mood-swings between the two themes, but returns to the crush theme for the end. as ever, wanting affection is always, even if secretly, more important and desired in the end.

Fugazi – Two Beats Off Lyrics 17 years ago
I always thought of it being about the temptation to dip into crime, even petty stuff, to survive and to give a better life for your family. In the end though, there's sadly no mercy when you're caught

Faith No More – Jizzlobber Lyrics 18 years ago
Anyone ever seen Silence of The Lambs?

Remember Miggs, the nutjob in the cell next to Hannibal Lector who swallowed his tongue?

Remember the scene where he throws his sperm onto Jodie Foster through his cell bars?

Following on from this reference, I think this song is about a guy in an sylum/prison for rape or murder and going even nuttier inside. And lobs some Jizz around too.

They Might Be Giants – Sapphire Bullets Of Pure Love Lyrics 18 years ago
Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love was an instrumental track by The Mahavishnu Orchestra- THE seminal jazz-rock band of the 70's- off their 2nd Album 'Birds of Fire'. Here, T.M.B.G take a literal reading of the track's title.

'John' refers to the guitarist/songwriter/bandleader of Mahavishnu Orchestra: John McLaughlin.

Check them out sometime.

The 'Gary Cooper Story' is, probably, a reference to high Noon and the 'man's gotta do what a man's gotta do' philosophy

Brilliant track.

don't pay attention to that cretin. Great track, great group- but if the lyrics seem underwhelming, remember that S.A.T.F.S are about the music first- and the music kicks arse.

Manic Street Preachers – Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart Lyrics 18 years ago
REFERENCES.

The title is a quote from Lenny Bruce and is most likely shortned to fit on the album cover. But that IS how it's spelt and it's NOT a potshot at American linguistics.

Grenada-Haiti-Poland-Nicaragua = all places where the US military have fought

Tipper Gore = For my fellow brits, she's Al Gore's wife and, long story short, she's the reason for those bloody 'Parental advisory' stickers on CDs.

Union Jack = UK's flag, in case you didn't know.

Moral Majority = movement of rich conservative christians that started around 1979 who believe in pro-life, censorship and the suppression of homosexuality. I'm sure Jesus would dissaprove of the cunts as much as most sane people do.

Zapruder = In case you've been on Mars for the last 50 years, this fella had hand-held camera footage of the Kennedy assassination. Back and to the left. Back and to the left....

Sam Colt = Gun manufacturer. The lyric is a popular saying.

Brady Bill = named after the fella who took a shot at Reagan and didn't finish the job, unfortunately. The bill legislated the five-day waiting period for guns in the US.

The higlight of the album to be sure, and yes, the sample IS an advert for a real event... the horror the horror.

Jane's Addiction – Had a Dad Lyrics 18 years ago
Interesting note: Perry allegedly told the rocord execs that the lyric 'God is dead' was actually 'god is...Dad', and it could be either really and still be a great song.

Yep, it's about feeling abandoned by God when there' so much conflict in the world ('tell him my brothers are all mad, they're beating on eachother') and feeling as if God is punishing you ('Dad's hand grew slow to the licking'- a reference ot getting a spanking?)

The 'talked to the mountain' section was originally part of the lyrics to Oceansize but moved here.

Fugazi – Long Distance Runner Lyrics 18 years ago
My interpretation? The long-distance race is a metaphor for life, searching for an answer and being unable to keep up with your friends, family and lovers at times, and the fight against the desire, at times, to give up completely- that's the 'fight with gravity' that Ian speaks of.

Fugazi – Walken's Syndrome Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is a tribute to Christopher Walkjen's character in Annie Hall (Director: Woody Allen) who fantasizes about crashing his car into another.

Not sure if it's an actual condition, but I adore this song as a elegy for a character who wants to die and ina way ('gone, gone, gone') is already dead. Fugazi- the only real contender for 'greatest band ever'.

Tom Waits – Singapore Lyrics 18 years ago
The legend Tom here continues the sailor theme from his previous album Swordfishtrombones, particularly the second track from that album, Shore Leave. It also has shades of the opening track of that album, Underground. Both are jumpy, up-tempo (at least in Wait's world) introductory tracks about a wolrd of misfits. But where Shore Leave was downbeat, low-key and focused on the minutia of a rainy trip, Singapore is a tour of a carnival of misfits.

Oh, and the lyric is 'rope of sin' not sand.

LYRICAL EXPLANATIONS!

The Land of Nod = Falling asleep obviously, but Nod was also the land that Cain took of for after killing Abel in the Bible.

Making Feet for Children's shoes= euphemism for sex.

In the land of the blind...= This is a quote from Erasmus.

Spectacular track from a spectacular album. Long live The Tom!

The Fall – Hip Priest Lyrics 18 years ago
This track is a diatribe against music journalists, particular the self-proclaimed young hipsters of the NME.

'Hip priest' is, too me, an attack on how self-sanctified and self-important, but ultimately as un-hip as anything else. The priest part certainly a reflection of their holier-than-thou attitudes.

"He is not appreciated", the track's catchphrase, slowly turns from pity of how under-appreciated said journalists are to a declaration that they are not wanted.

"I got my last clean dirty shirt out of the wardrobe" is paraphrased from the Kris Kristoferson song 'Sunday Morning Coming Down'. I read it as a reflection of the faux-bohemian lifestyle these journalists claim to live, whilst in fact it is a derivative act of self-publicity.

Just like to add I think this the crown jewel of The Fall's songs and the rarest thing in music- a completely unique track.

Listen to it and be enlightened!

Marilyn Manson – mOBSCENE Lyrics 18 years ago
The chorus to this track- for the most part - is taken an homage (or rip-off if you're cynical- and i am!) to Be Aggressive by Faith No More of their album Angel Dust. The cheerleaders and delivery are dead ringers.
