Fugazi – Facet Squared Lyrics 14 years ago
I am nearly 100% certain that the line "they should never... ...touch the ground" is a play on the idea that (at least in America) flags should never touch the ground; however I think Ian means they should never be placed in the ground, or used as symbol to represent a particular region or group of people, as they are "such ugly things."

I think the overall tone of the song is just an assessment or observation on nationalism and the ignorance that accompanies it. Bloody brilliant opening track.

The Clash – The Crooked Beat Lyrics 14 years ago
The bass line in this song is great. In terms of the meaning, the first post seems to have nailed it.

Frodus – Year Of The Hex Lyrics 15 years ago
I love the guitar on this track... a la Fugazi repeater era; this song is pretty cool as Nathan is singing on it. Pretty sure it is about people who value money over life itself.

Frodus – The Misaligned Men Of Flomaton Lyrics 15 years ago
I too met Jason and Shelby and they are, in fact, super nice guys! I am pretty sure this songs deals with rejection or having low-self esteem; I read an interview with Shelby in which he claimed a lot of songs he was writing dealt with that.

Frodus – There Will Be No More Scum Lyrics 15 years ago
I think the alternate version of the song may be a bit better than the version on Weapons... It was on a compilation cd, it features Nathan singing in a few more parts, not to mention it is slightly different. As far as the meaning, it seems to be about or similar at least Karl Marx's theory about alienation and how technology further alienates man from himself.

Fugazi – Smallpox Champion Lyrics 15 years ago
This one is pretty straight foward... I must add, that the last fourth of the song, when that fabulous melody comes in... is awesome!

Public Image Ltd – Theme Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with the first comment, and this track being about boredom; more in particular i think John Lydon's boredom with the dogmatism being established in punk. I also imagine that a lot of it is probably improvised a la Damo Suzuki. I have read John was doing that in the studio a decent amount during the early PIL days.

Pretty Girls Make Graves – This Is Our Emergency Lyrics 15 years ago
i've always thought it was about individualism or perhaps being in a band and believing in your band so much, but kind of feeling like it's going nowhere.

The Pop Group – Don't Sell Your Dreams Lyrics 15 years ago
i think the main refrain is pretty straight foward; don't sell your dreams and don't let society dictate what you do.

The Vines – True as the Night Lyrics 15 years ago
The first half of this song seems to have a bit of a Smiths influence - I'm not sure if Craig is a fan, but maybe it's a subconscious influence. I like the false ending just like in the song "Winning Days."

The Vines – Orange Amber Lyrics 15 years ago
Sounds like it's about the seasons of life passing you by; some of the melodies in this song are so Beatlesy...

Nation Of Ulysses – Diptheria Lyrics 16 years ago
it's obviously a metaphor for something being "sugar coated"

Crass – Shaved Women Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this is about how women shave to be more sexually appealing, and using the Jack Kerouac school of thought 'Pretty girls make graves' (i.e. lust is the direct cause of birth, which is the direct cause of suffering and death) that would make sense based on the "In all our decadence people die" line.
Just my interpretation...

Against Me! – The Politics of Starving Lyrics 16 years ago
i think that the imagery of 'starving' is metaphorical. It seems like when he says, "when you are so hungry that you'd believe anything." That the "hunger" is a hunger to believe what you are being told. Not a literal hunger...

submissions
Fugazi – Promises Lyrics 16 years ago
the beginning and ending of this song are really great... it's like two songs in one. i.e. How promises are just words and how we "speak the way we breathe" but then the end is very encouraging and positive. i.e. "go where you think you want to go do everything you were sent here for..."

submissions
Fugazi – Life and Limb Lyrics 16 years ago
i think this song might have to do with animals rights/vegetarianism

submissions
Black Flag – My War Lyrics 17 years ago
I definitly see how this song could be about drugs...but I'm pretty sure it's just straight foward, and is about feeling like you can't trust anyone. Chuck Dukowski wrote this one, not Greg Ginn.

Fugazi – Forensic Scene Lyrics 17 years ago
two opinions from me....
it could be a song about someone letting you down or breaking your heart;
but i also kind of thought like it may have been about having to look a certain way to be considered beautiful in societys eyes- more or less, SEX SELLS

i'm pretty sure this isn't about how political bands are "cliche", i'm pretty sure it's just a song against George Bush

submissions
At the Drive-In – Picket Fence Cartel Lyrics 17 years ago
i think the song is about religion, i've recently heard Cedric say he doesn't particularly like religion, and the song could be about how 'daddy'(higher power,God/or the church) how people are so repressed by religion and the thoughtsof salvation keep them essentially locked into a certain demographic

submissions
Alkaline Trio – Cop Lyrics 17 years ago
It's funny to me, that instead of posting what you think the song is about, people make this their personal blog space. Fuck cops, fuck the 82nd airborne division. Cops help define what is the definition of 'abuse of power' and soldiers essentially do the same thing, all while helping preserve corporate interests.

submissions
Glassjaw – Cosmopolitan Bloodloss Lyrics 18 years ago
i think this song is infact about abortion as aforementioned, but i think Daryl is singing about it from a sarcastic view point; pointing out how most people who oppose abortion thing that people who have abortions are "immpassionate ugly people"

Fugazi – Give Me the Cure Lyrics 18 years ago

the locust don't have shit on this band VFD, they're jokecore pioneers. i think the original guitarist made a myspace for them, that's what a buddy of mine said. i actually stole my name on here from one of their guitar players. they're funny as shit, if you can find their material.

Crass – Punk Is Dead Lyrics 18 years ago
i think that joe boxer, has made the best point thus far, london calling is infact "more punk", because the clash don't allow themselves to be tied down by what punk is supposed to sound like. Hell, London Calling doesn't sound like the Exploited ranting about the same bullshit, it experiments with disco, jazz, reggae, and punk. London Calling is timeless.

Crass – Punk Is Dead Lyrics 18 years ago
Music genres, for the most part, can't die. They do go into periods of recession and peaks. Like say, in the 90's, punk was fairly popular from the time Nirvana brought it into the mainstream, until the end of the Ska craze at the end of the 90's. Now, all that hardcore rubbish is popular, as is the whole "screamo"/victory records thing. Eventually hardcore will not be popular, and a new musical trend will occupy todays youth, but hardcore will not be dead, just not popular.

lexicon devil thinks he's a bad ass because he listens to the germs......the germs are o.k., kind of slow, but they've got some good songs...any way Crass is probably one of the most political bands ever. Up there with Fugazi, Propagandhi, Nausea, etc. i enjoy the Clash, and i've acutally read the Steve Ignorant was a Clash fan, Crass was cool, because they actually talked the talk and walked the walk. Crass was not cool because to me, it seems like they think they're so much more legit(for lack of a better word) than everyone else.

alot of people, have been making references to the Soviet Union, and i just thought perhaps this song is about Francis Gary Powers, the pilot of a U2 spy plane during the cold war, his plane was shot down and he was captured and tried for espionage.

At the Drive-In – Hulahoop Wounds Lyrics 18 years ago
i think that if anything, the 'run and get your quarters in' means, hurry up and sign the band (before another label) so we (the label) can cash in on this trend/ style of music/band. the 'at the top of the roof, he says "game over" ' part seems to be saying, "ok we've used you for all you're worth now we're done with you." This is a really good song, it has alot of great vocal melodies in it.

The Clash – White Riot Lyrics 18 years ago
i saw an interview with Paul Simonon ,the bassist for the Clash, and he said this song was about how the black people were standing up for themselves and against the national front, which was a pro-white movement in the U.K. at the time, and he said that the white people in the U.K. needed to stand up against the national front, and stand up like the blacks were doing, thus the calling for a 'white riot.'

At the Drive-In – Pattern Against User Lyrics 18 years ago
i can see this song being about drug abuse...

"circus carny gaurding the gates of heaven" - circus carnies are looked down on as trashy people, and in a way the carny could be symbollic of a drug dealer, and "heaven"
could be the high of the drug, thus you have to get through the gates( buy the drugs from the dealer) to get to heaven.

the part about " ..stuck in limbo abduction..." - could mean how you literally bend over backwards to get your fix.

"take the wieght out of living..." - getting high to escape reality

"wormed our way through distant earth" - earth/reality seems distant when high, and you just float through life if you're a drug addict.

a "hypodermic person," would appear to be a drug addict who "pokes fun at the living," doesn't care enough of reality to face it head on, take it seriously.

the part where the "ederly" are mention, maybe talking about experienced drug users....
many more signs seem to make this song point to addiction of some sort.....

At the Drive-In – Catacombs Lyrics 18 years ago
i think this song could be about being ostracized, or being different; Saying "did you ever attempt to sleep inside my tomb," could be saying, "did you ever walk a mile in my shoes?" kind of idea. The part that really struck me was the chorus line that says, "this gravity, is a quadreplegic horse and carraige." i thought that may mean, "people are to indifferent to difference." Because a quadreplegic can't move with ease, and thus maybe meaning, people won't allow themselves to change, and except new things/ideas. The part about kicking from the womb could mean, breaking free from a so-called "normal" way-of-life/routine, and the "excavation of the fossils" could be talking about people judging other people/styles with out looking into what they're really about.
Just my thoughts any way, the neat thing about it being so vague, is it can mean something to everyone, depending on how you look at it.

At the Drive-In – Extracurricular Lyrics 18 years ago
i think it's about how the band didn't like people moshing at their shows; lines such as "sit still, or you just can't listen"..and i think that the "the weak are supposed to die" line could be from a mosher's point of view, and the first word is indeed nuisance, Cedric could be saying that the moshing kids are a nuisance. The "out stayed our welcome" could be about how moshing kids get mad that the band looks down on moshing. Just a guess, ATDI writes very vague lyrics, so i could be (and probably am) way off.
