Toad the Wet Sprocket – All Right Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Written and sung by Todd Nichols (the lead guitarist), this song is possibly his reaction to Toad's success with the Fear album. Referencing to climbing a ladder that leads nowhere...the call of the lorelei (who seem enticing but are in reality out for blood)... I don't know. Honestly, this is the first time I thought it might be about that, and "All Right" is my favorite Toad song! I usually listened to it when I was feeling down, and it always encapsulated those darkest of emotions. |
Jimmy Eat World – Let It Happen Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Sad to say, but I kind of agree with ellliot. Outside of this song and a few others, I'm not crazy about Chase This Light. After Stay on My Side Tonight (which I LOVED), I was shocked at how this album sounded. If they had cut a couple of the weaker tracks and added Distraction, Take Em As They Come, and Open Bar Reception, it'd probably sound much better overall. |
Jimmy Eat World – Take 'Em As They Come Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Should have been on Chase This Light, even if it's a cover. |
Jimmy Eat World – Distraction Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Why wasn't this song included on Chase This Light? Crap, the b-sides are so much better than most of the album. Distraction and Take Em As They Come are easily the best two songs from the CTL sessions. This song is classic Jimmy Eat World. Almost a throwback to the Static days. |
Idlewild – Meet Me At The Harbour Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Kickass song. I have no idea what it's about. Some sort of clandestine meeting ("at the harbour") that's been exposed (communications found out). I dunno. Maybe it's just about getting busted for hiring a hooker. |
Ryan Adams – To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I swear it sounds like he's saying: young gal, done you bad, and I went and did ya wrong young gal, you done me bad, so I went and did your mom |
Toad the Wet Sprocket – Begin Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Actually, I read some quote from Glen explaining that this is a true story of a girl (not a boy) dealing with her father's death...but told from the perspective of the mother. |
Eels – Numbered Days Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Definitely my favorite Eels song. Not exactly sure what it means. There seems to be a death metaphor in there ("the sun is gonna set...there's nothing I regret" and then of course the chorus). Might be about an elderly man who doesn't want to argue with his old love, or a family member ("no need to go and burn it down now" - like burning bridges). |
Eels – In The Yard, Behind The Church Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think that's probably right. The narrator is in a graveyard with the one he loves, and all that matters is that they're alive and together. The graveyard reminds him that that's what is most important. |
She Wants Revenge – Tear You Apart Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Seems like a professor or teacher obsessed with one of his students - hence the "danger" of it being more than "just a crush." Also, I don't think the chorus is necessarily about actual rape, but more likely the dark fantasies that many people have. |
Rilo Kiley – Does He Love You? Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm not sure why people think the narrator didn't know the man she was having an affair with was her friend's husband. If they're such good friends, how could she not know who her husband is? There's no evidence in the song to suggest otherwise. Anyway, I'm pretty sure she's defending herself toward the end: Let's not forget ourselves good friend "I am flawed if I'm not free" That "flawed" part is what the friend used to say, so the narrator is throwing her (the friend's) words back in her face. That's why distortion is used in the vocals right there. But it doesn't matter, says the narrator, because "your husband will never leave you for me." That's how I took it. |
Barenaked Ladies – Wrap Your Arms Around Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't see how a song about domestic abuse is "sexy." |
Eels – In The Yard, Behind The Church Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Maybe not a "family" picnic. They are getting naked, after all... |
Eels – Things The Grandchildren Should Know Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Since Blinking Lights is basically a concept album following one person through his entire life, I'd say those last lines are probably the inscription on his grave: So in the end I'd like to say That I'm a very thankful man I tried to make the most of my situations And enjoy what I have I knew true love and I knew passion And the difference between the two I have some regrets but if I had to do it all again Well, it's something I'd like to do Little bit of a tongue-in-cheek reincarnation reference at the end there. It's a nice sentiment, but also kind of funny too (much like how E's humor shows up on all his other albums). |
Eels – Elizabeth On The Bathroom Floor Lyrics | 18 years ago |
DuctTape, I think that line is fairly literal. Elizabeth has just tried to commit suicide, but obviously the cat doesn't know what that means, so it's just licking her face, trying to wake her up. So she's not dead (supporting the failed attempt interpretation) because she feels the cat's tongue, which leads into the next few lines in that verse about not wanting to be woken up (ever). |
Barenaked Ladies – War On Drugs Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Hard to admit I fought the war on drugs My hands were tied and the phone was bugged Another died and the world just shrugged it off" Didn't BNL do public service announcements about not doing drugs? That could be what this verse is referring to. |
Barenaked Ladies – Have You Seen My Love Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't think it has to do with Alzheimer's (although that's an interesting interpretation) or even "when your girlfriend is mad at you," but being with someone who has changed for the worse over the course of the relationship. Seems like he's lying awake at night, looking at the woman lying next to him, and thinking, "I don't even know who you are anymore." I think the song is trying to convey a much deeper emotion than "don't be mad at me." Such a well-written song, like so much of BNL's more serious material. |
Idlewild – Don't Let Me Change Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Definitely one of the best Idlewild b-sides released in the last few years. You can find it on the single for Love Steals Us From Loneliness (CD 1), with "Gone Too Long" (another great track). I know other lyric sites say the line is "To serve blindly on the tray," but if you really listen to that part, it sure sounds like Roddy is singing "brandy" - which would make more sense to be served on a tray, anyway. |
