Insomnium – The Descent Lyrics 9 years ago
I wrote these three acoustic songs as B-sides for the original version of Ephemeral. just to save time and money I record everything by myself at home here in UK. Many Insomnium songs have been originally written with acoustic guitar so I have lots of similar short acoustic pieces hidden in my drawer just waiting to see the daylight. I've been a massive fan of acoustic stuff since I first heard the Ulver's Kveldsabger. Another big influence for me was Finnish band called Tenhi. Moreover, many nineties' metal bands used lots of acoustic and clean guitars in their songs. Thus, it's not a surprise that acoustic interludes became huge part of Insomnium's sound as well.

Insomnium – The Promethean Song Lyrics 9 years ago
Another part written:

Lyrics are in this case inspired by couple of poems by Goethe himself. In the end I just took a few ideas from him and wrote a completely different kind of story that would better suit Insomnium and our Finnish melancholy. The title gives you a clear clue about how to interpret this song.

Insomnium – Out to the Sea Lyrics 9 years ago
We ended up recording 11 songs in total with these album sessions. As ten songs already tick around 56 minutes we decided it would be a good call to leave one song as bonus. Just to keep the actual album but more coherent. This song came together quite easily. I remember playing the parts with acoustic guitar and just recording stuff down to my iPhone after moving near London. After I blocked the chorus par from one of Markus's demos it was pretty much a wrap. Lyrically it's about seeking comfort and solitude from nature. There's just something soothing about walking in the forest far away from all the noise; strong sensation of coming home and being part of the wild.

Insomnium – Ephemeral Lyrics 9 years ago
What Insomnium wrote in their booklet :
We did have a lengthy discussion whether to include this song to the actual album or not. In the end we decided to make some tweaks, brought up by our producer slash recorded Teemu, and re-cord it. And I think it was really good decision as we managed to do some things bit better this time. The song itself is really simple but then quite catchy as these thins often do go hand in hand. Easy piece to band your head with. Lyrics are probably the most positive ones I've ever written. But I guess you need to let these things out of your system sometimes. The you can be all dark and gloomy again.

Insomnium – Lose to Night Lyrics 9 years ago
What Insomnium wrote in their booklet :
I think I had this song pretty much finished already back in 2012. I first thought that this song could be too simple and "pop" for Insomnium. And a lot of people probably think that is. However, I found myself humming the melodies just too often to hide it in the drawer. To bring some heaviness into it I ended up adding a new verse to it later. Maybe because it was one of the first songs that came together I really got fed up with it at some point. However, when I heard the first mix it sounded again really good. And somehow, it fit right in the mix by being just that much different from the other tracks we have on this album. The lyrics behind the song deals with the fact that sometimes you end up learning things the hard way. But because life goes on, you just need to come to terms with everything.

Insomnium – Revelation Lyrics 9 years ago
What Insomnium wrote in their booklet :
"Revelation" was the first song that I wrote for Insomnium, and hence, it will always have a special meaning for me. I already knew all about Insomnium tricks and traps as I've been under the radar for a decade. So I just needed to click my brain on Insomnium mode and go with the flow. This one is a Gothenburg-type fast song and reminds me a bit my own band Omnium Gatherum.
M. Vanhala

These were the first lyrics I finished for this album. Some poems by Finnish poet Uuno Kailas have influenced this text. The theme is not very dark or death metal in the end but... shall I say hopeful or empowering. I'll leave it up to you to make your own interpretation.

Insomnium – While We Sleep Lyrics 9 years ago
What Insomnium wrote in their booklet :
I think it was back in the spring of 2013, when Century Media threw out an idea of recording a new single, which wold be released beforehand the actual album. We already had couple of songs pretty much finished but I still tried to come up with another catchy song for this purpose. This song became later While We Sleep. Even though all the people in the band liked it, Ephemeral pulled the longer straw and became the number one single choice. In the hindsight, this was absolutely the right choice, as this song needed a bit more attention and caring to actually fly on its own. The addition of clean vocals was a bit last minute thing; I've had this idea for long time but actually had already forgot about it in amidst of all the hurry and rush. I only remembered this couple of nights before and decided to give it a go. All vocal harmonies were thrown in spontaneously, and surprisingly, it sounds more coherent and thought of than it actually is. You just need to go with the flow sometimes. Lyrics deal about forgetting to live in this moment when you're too much concentrated on the future. It's also about realizing that this is it and there's no going back. There's no point of rushing through your life ; It's important to slow down.

Insomnium – The Primeval Dark Lyrics 9 years ago
What Insomnium wrote in their booklet :
Having an intro song has become a kind of trademark of ours. It sets the mood for the album nicely and usually works well live. This time I tried to come up with something different by concentrating in rhythmic side of things. The melody line are but folky but blend in nicely and lose their characteristics when mixed with hypnotic rhythm pattern giving way something fresh and interesting. I also wanted things to happen faster this time; there's not too much of building up the the theme. Drummer gets the early spotlight and other members follow shortly. Lyrically the song is all about dark sky , black clouds, relentless rain and breaking of the waves : call of the sea from the fathomless dark

Insomnium – Black Heart Rebellion Lyrics 9 years ago
What Insomnium wrote in their booklet about this song :
We've always liked long and epic songs and this one is a bit more darker and aggressive approach to this same theme. I've always listened to black metal and the first band I ever went to record an album with was musically closer to this style (band called Arrival). Aggressiveness comes mainly from the drumming, which include blast beats and lots of double bass drums. However, it's still very melodic song and for example the interlude is quite soft and gives contrast to all the pounding. It's a bit different take on everything we've done before but I think the song still sounds pretty much of Insomnium. The first version was longer and included an epic ending part. With the second demo I decided to streamline the whole arrangement just to keep it more cohesive. To give more room for all the part that already were there. You need to restrain yourself sometimes to not get carried away. Lyrically the song is about self-belief and finding your own way and path in life. It's hard to swim against the stream but in the end it makes you stronger.

Insomnium – Collapsing Words Lyrics 9 years ago
What Insomnium wrote in their booklet about this song :
For some reason it took really long time to get this one together. In the end, I discarded everything except the chorus, which also went through a serious revamp. Bit more of a traditional Insomnium Son with characteristic balance between riffs and melodies. Builds up towards the end with minor post-rock ambience influences. Lyrics were written in the middle of the recording session in the bus. We were running against really tight schedules and I tried to work on the songs whenever wherever.

i just remember that we did not have any snow at all and that it was really dark all the time. I guess it kind of made you feel bit paranoia because you could not really tell if it was morning or evening. And this is something that went into the lyrics as well. I guess it's my take on our information society where knowledge is power, but knowing too much can be dangerous. Everything is well as long as you stick with the collective story; being different and questioning things brings you all kinds of trouble. V. Friman

Insomnium – The River Lyrics 9 years ago
What Insomnium wrote in their booklet about this song :
This one I co-wrote with Niilo. Niilo came up with the first riff with his strange synth tracked demos and I wrote the rest of the song around that. I decided to take a path through mid 90's death/black metal. The band we used to listen back then (and still listen) include Dissection, Diabolical Masquerade, Dark Tranquillity, Amorphis etc. Naturally, all these influences can be heard on this song. Besides being first collaboration with Niilo it's also a groundbreaking song for me because I actually did the first clean vocal demo for it myself. And I don't normally sing at all. unless I'm in a karaoke bar and have already had 10 beer. M. Vanhala

The starting riff is already a couple of years old and not it finally found its place. Markus took my strange trackers demos and built the rest of the song around this one riff. Seamless co-operation! I have to give some credit to Sweden for the lyrical side as the idea to this text came from a poem by Carl Michael Bellman. I've used some characters from Greek mythology before (Medeia) and in this song we have Charon, the ferryman of Hades. This is the kind of composition that you just have to sing about the river of death. So very death metal. N. Sevanen

Insomnium – The Promethean Song Lyrics 9 years ago
What the band wrote in their booklet about this song:
Slow and easy death metal ballad! My "being Ville Friman" -moment, in terms of trying to compose as much as Ville -like Insomnium song as I could. And I think I got quite deep in the mind of that guy musically. Arranged partly in the backstage of one venue in Rennes (France) and in the summer cabin surrounded by the woods (Finland). How romantic, hah. Natural continuum for other Insomnium-type ending sons, such as "One For Sorrow" and "Weighed Down With Sorrow". M.Vanhala

Insomnium – Shadows of the Dying Sun Lyrics 9 years ago
This was written in the booklet:
And this is how it all ends. One of the first songs I got finished pretty much by accident. The first demo had only these couple of riffs and I as not really sure what to make of it. I think it was Niilo who suggested that maybe it could become this long hypnotic song that repeats the same basic pattern throughout the song. And after couple of tweaks and small adjustments it was pretty much there. The song title also became the album title bit later. The story of the song is firmly rooted to science but dressed in a form of a poem. Lyrics say it all. V. Friman

Insomnium – In The Groves Of Death Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is about someone who has lost all of his hope and is very desperate ,then he goes and talks to his father who is dead and finds hope in the end:

First Verse:
The son goes to the cemetery in the night seeking his father ,a cemetery that is located in the woods.
Hallowed trees + Where the fir trees whisper of those been those gone + Where the sacred earth still hides all those we once loved = These were the parts that got me thinking about cemetery and the fact that his father is dead. Later , near the ending of the song there is another implication of this : "In this lowly halls.."
which I will explain there.

Chorus: The son has reached his destination and is now talking to his father, describing how he is feeling and how terrible his life is at the moment

Second Verse:

He continues describing his life and states that he has been this fragile and confused since his birth (He has never been a strong person)

"Hear me now my hapless son.... By yourself you will have time to repent"

This is the part where the deceased father starts speaking to his son and tries to comfort him and give him some motivations.
He acknowledges the fact that his son is living a miserable life (hapless son)
advises him to warn away his fears and live his life to the fullest since life is short and death is more hard and cruel that life no matter how hard his life is at the moment ,In the end the father says that the son shouldn't live his life in repentance because eventually he will die and have enough time to repent.

"In these lowly halls... No tears are seen no laughter heard"

The father describes the situation in the graves.
"No moon will beam no sun will shine"
States that the people in graves get no light. It can also state that people are not affected by the changes of the earth (Day,night or other changes) once they are dead.

"In these narrow rooms No tears are seen no laughter heard"
The father resembles the very confined place of coffin to a narrow room and says that the dead don't have any feelings, they feel no happiness nor sorrow.

The last part of the song:
The son ,now fully motivated and calm, visits the nature and is determined to greet all the bad things that are going to happen in the future .

The parts that are still vague to me:

"Where the fir tress whisper of those been those gone"
My question: Why the Fir Trees? Why did the poet use this type of trees for his lyric? Are there any myths about fir trees? Are these trees shaped in a way that makes the observers think that there are trapped spirits inside?

"In the woods the fiends sigh I swear I heard the demons neigh"
What does he mean by this part? What is the woods a reference to?His current state of life or the woods he just crossed to get to the cemetery?

"On the seashore I espy the dreadful void under the tides"
"Ill assorted with this life these cares"
"Better it would be to stay in the shades in the thicket of the dead in groves of death Here I would lie to the end of the days"

Insomnium – One for Sorrow Lyrics 9 years ago
I have read this lyric many times.I'm not very good at interpreting poems and lyrics but I wanna share my thought so that others may come and we can have a discussion over this.
This song is about a love story. The general story is about a broken relationship between 2 persons that were deeply in love.It doesn't state the reason for the break up,it could be a failed relationship or death of one of these two.
The title : One For Sorrow: As you already know "one for sorrow" is is a traditional children's nursery rhyme about magpies. According to an old superstition, the number of magpies one sees determines if one will have bad luck or not.
There are different versions of this rhyme and one is written in this album's booklet:one for sorrow/two for luck/three for a wedding/four for death/five for silver/six for gold/seven for a secret not to be told/eight of heaven/nine for hell/ten for devil's own sell
when they say in chorus : "always one for sorrow"it could mean that there are different versions of this rhyme that some lines change in them but the only part that has never changed all this time is the first line, the first number.stating that number one is always dedicated to sorrow whereas love , has never taken the first place.
another interpretation is that sorrow always prevails against love saying that every relationship is destined to fail.

2 verses of this song try to describe someone who has lost the love of his life and is dealing with it's consequences.

''I am the last, the one who hold on the past, clinging on something we used to have''saying that after this break up the person dwells in the past and always thinking about the relationship.

''I am the last, the one who chose this path,to walk among the world of shadows''
this part can have 2 meanings :
1) I could mean that I ,willingly ,decided to start this relationship and now that I'm hurt ,I am dealing with the consequences.
2)it could also mean that I made a mistake during my relationship and that mistake led to a break up

Chorus:
"Always one for sorrow/Never one for love/Two souls destined to failure/Right from the start/Always one for sorrow/Never one for love/Two souls set for departure/Before the nightfall"
I think that the correct form of this part is like this:
Two souls are set for departure ,their destination is failure and they move before the nightfall.Stating that every single relationship is doomed and they will fail dearly in the end. This is the tale told from someone whose heart is broken and saying all these so that others become aware.

''And here I stand, devoid of faith ,bereft of hope, unable to break the walls around me''
When a good relationship ends ,it is hard to have any hope towards the future or about starting other relationship.

''And here I stand, shell of a man from the past, condemned to world of resentment''
Again stating that this person dwells in the past.

''It took two to summon the thunder''
It says when a couple are together(before the break up)they can make great things happen such as summoning the thunder.

"one to bring down the rain"
Bringing down the rain is a metaphor for crying a lot, saying that the remaining person is crying his/her eyes out.

"two to torn all asunder"
it says that when the couples are together, they can fight against all the odds and problems together and also make great changes.

"one to suffer the pain"
in a relationship ,the couple overcome the problems on their way together but after the break up each of them must face the all the pain and suffering separately on their own.If this song is about losing your loved one because of death,it could also mean that the deceased are gone and won't suffer anymore whereas their partner is here alive and must face all the suffering alone.

"two to crush dreams and wonders"
I think this means that sometimes in a relationships you must let go of some of your dreams for the sake of your relationship and your partner,or since you're engaged in a relationship some of your talents become obsolete because you spend most of your time with your partner.

"one to lose everything"
saying that after the break up , not only you've lost your partner, you've let go of a lot of your dreams and opportunities that came to your doorstep for the sake of of this relationship and now you've practically got nothing.

"all once beautiful and sacred, nothing but in vain"
saying that when everything's fine every single thing seems beautiful but after you reach sorrow and grief, they all begin to change.all of them begin to lose the meaning they once had and seem empty ,hollow, vain.
