Departer
The blinding white
so far behind, I am
and running over idle ground
This evening I kept my word
Did you? I'm turning around
wait for your sound
(all day)
So far, according to who?
Departer
The journey of our lives
I'm so slow compared to you
Departer
Its the month of July
Brother
In your eyes i was the stronger
so how am I to cover you now?
without shadowing your path?
This time, I watch from the sidelines
you're a ghost in the limelight
face your fears and pierce the night.
I'm so close
If only you knew
Defender
Story of our lives
I'm so rash compared to you (I swear)
Surrender (you know its the truth)
Its the path of our lives
so far behind, I am
and running over idle ground
This evening I kept my word

Another Katatonia classic. Great song, and an absolutely fucking awesome record.
But I had a thought, couldn't it be possible that Krister Linder's "character", singing from "Brother, in your eyes I was the stronger", could be spoken from a deceased close one? How he has always protected and loved his brother and that now that he has has passed away, he can't look after and protect his brother, instead being forced to watch from the sidelines?
After listening to this many times on repeat (its so good), I came to the same conclusion as Mellanslaget.

I loved how one brother thinks he's slow and falling behind, while the now-dead brother thinks of himself as rash. It's all a matter of perspective...

There is something so beautiful about this part, it's hard to identify. A promise from long ago that the surviving brother was able to fulfill?

Probably my favorite song on this album. The whole record is awesome though.

Listening today with headphones on... I don't know if anyone else notices this, but at the very beginning before Jonas sings, there is ambient noise in the background. To me, it sounds like a typewriter, someone typing a letter on it. The sounds are distorted, but I'm almost certain it's a typewriter.

Also, in Jonas' chorus before the guest vocalist comes up -- in the background he is saying "I swear it's true", and something else, "You swear" or "You say" I can't remember. I don't have the liner notes with me, cos I'm at work. But I do know it's "Your ghost in the limelight" and not "You're a" -- otherwise it seems pretty spot on.
Can't get enough of this album, or this song.
It's a song about a deceased loved one.

Yes, Cupid, you're very right and the lyrics are very powerful. Judging by this song and the song "July" itself, it seems that July is very important to Jonas..and with "Departer"'s lyrics, I'm tempted to say that he really did lose his brother. So very sad, even still. This song gives me chills and I find myself listening to it on repeat for hours.
I have to agree with everyone when it comes to this song seeming to be about the death of his brother or someone he at least viewed as one. It's such a beautiful, emotional, heart and soul touching song. I love listening to it especially on a late night cruise in my car.
