Morrissey – Jacky's Only Happy When She's Up on the Stage Lyrics
| 5 years ago
|
@[davie_bravo:27617]
dunno, think it is more likely to be a straightforward song - something similar in his work would be 'Girl Least Likely To' or 'Art Hounds' someone who doesn't realise how bad they are at what they are doing and actually finds solace in it as they have lost someone...
Free in the truth of make-believe
Since she lost you
Another thought that springs to mind are those reality 'talent' shows such as the x factor when fairly often the person on stage is utterly deluded while the rest of us are heading for the exit. You probably 'get that' I suppose and feel there is also a parallel with something else. I think the video which is a parody and is excruciating to watch , although somewhat compelling, like a train wreck supports this more 'what you see is what you get' interpretation. |

Adele – Someone Like You Lyrics

it is a lovely tune and a very personal lyric that is sung very well. Adele's mystifying relative success (with 322 million youtube hits etc) does not take anything away from the great job she did. Zander Zon's instrumental version is very moving in a different way. If you are into the tone of a bass guitar check it out immediately. |

Bob Dylan – Need a Woman Lyrics

i have only head the version from bootleg series vol 2 , (hard to imagine a better version) not sure if there is another take, but the lyrics posted on this site (and the ones i quoted) don't agree with bootleg vol 2 version and i've never actually heard them sung. Whatever the case, the bootleg version of 'Need A women' is for me one of the the highlights of the entire bootleg series and a total knockout. |

Bob Dylan – Need a Woman Lyrics

Songs don't come more under appreciated than this one. Dylan's vocal is mesmerising, the production SMOKES, the lyrics show a bit of vulnerability. I honestly don't think there is anyone on the planet who could improve on this vocal.
"Now you don't frighten me, my heart is jumping
And you look like it wouldn't hurt you none to have a man who could give ya something."
The guy just has it. |

The Smiths – Jeane Lyrics

"cash on the nail" = payment made immediately
"ice on the sink where we bathe" stands out as does
"no heavenly choirs, not for me and not for you"
pretty much every line here is quotable and poetic - such sadness in this song |

Eva Cassidy – You Take My Breath Away Lyrics

Claire Hamill, I think, according to the profile of the 'best of' album on the performingsongwriter website wrote it. The song actually does take your breath away and I particularly appreciate the simplicity and directness of the words, not to forget Eva Cassidy who hit it out the park as usual. |

Morrissey – I Have Forgiven Jesus Lyrics

all im saying is that for christians the terminology is far far from base, - ridiculous really, not at all realistic - no more than 'satan has rejected my soul' is close to true sentiment, so the song is something else - tongue in cheek is one way of putting it, yes. you mention some pretty heavy concepts in your reply, eh, well, there is much to say on such matters, but for christians God is good, yes. praiseworthy yes. For us, the word 'forgiveness' is a loaded word. Really, we do believe God is good. its a biggie for us. If the murderer in the dock says to the judge 'i forgive you' - it's comedy. it is only funny in a film. Pure comedy gold. |

Morrissey – I Have Forgiven Jesus Lyrics

The video lets us know that Morrissey is in character here as a priest. yes, and the character is speaking to Jesus, debating with God. Priests? Think celibacy. That is a big part of the struggle - "why did you give me such desire, when there is no where i can go to offload this desire" blah blah blah . Speaking personally, as someone who actually does believe in Jesus, unlike Morrissey, there is NO WAY a Christian would say 'I have forgiven Jesus' pretty much under any circumstances. Questioning God, I can cope with. Bewildered by life and providence, yep. Think of the book of Job. Accusing God of wrongdoing is crossing the line, one that Job didn't do, generally speaking. To say God you were wrong, but I have forgiven you now is turning reality on it's head. Forgiveness FROM God is at the heart of Christianity so Morrissey is being blasphemous here, without question. No doubt he is aware of that, but i don't know how many Morrissey fans care about such matters. The man has used religous imagery before in a jokey way 'Satan Has Rejected My Soul' but for him it is all imagery. Christians do sometimes struggle with God, their faith, life including sexuality, of course, and they may have wrong feelings toward God and cross the line. But they would NEVER say 'I have forgiven Jesus'. |

Morrissey – Maladjusted Lyrics

yep. it's from the perspective of a 15 year old working girl. How did she get into it ? Someones said to her "Be mine. let's stay out for the night". Her background? "Jeer the lights in the windows of all safe and stable home but wondering then well what could peace of mind me like?" Her environment? The streets of London. An intensely moving song. |

The Smiths – Death at One's Elbow Lyrics

Question: Why did Morrissey warn Glen not to pop round in this slice of rockabilly?
Answer:
a. Because there's someone here, who'll take a hatchet to your ear
b. Because you'll slip on the trail of all my sad remains
that's why that's why
It is FUNNY. that's all |

The Smiths – Unhappy Birthday Lyrics

Musically, this is v strong. For a long time i didn't really listen to this or 'Death At Ones Elbow' from Strangeways (easily my fave Smiths album) but now a good few years later it's a case of loving every track. 'Unhappy Bithday' is a really good lyric although in my opinion it is not one of his best relatively speaking - it is one of the band's tracks where I am in awe of Marr but Morrissey is merely excellent :) other examples are barbarism begins at home and the headmaster ritual. I think as far as the lyric to unhappy birthday is concerned it is important to go to the birthday card scenario from the point of view of it all being 'unsaid'. It is the same with 'from the one you left behind' line. To actually utter those words would be exceptionally lame and it is lame to sing them at someone too, or put it in a card, so keep it unsaid and don't send the card. Morrissey is a very sincere person, whatever else you may say about him, he would appreciate it may be sometimes hard to say 'Happy Birthday' hence the song, but it doesn't mean the singer strolls into the party saying 'I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday because your evil and you lie'. It took me a while to really like this one as i've said, the music really is beautiful and subtle too. The lyrics on this album work at a deep almost subconscious level throughout. |

Orange Juice – What Presence?! Lyrics
|
talk about presence - this song has amazing presence. really it is super good from a musical point of view; one of the best songs from the 80's - no doubt in my mind about that. Had edwyn been seeing ghosts? All that river running dry patter at the end really works too, probably referring to the river of creativity, but it matters little. Like the way he is out in the street, unable to sleep, under the harvest moon, with the tune (or whatever) screaming in his ears. what a song!! |

Sufjan Stevens – Djohariah Lyrics

I don't know what I like the most; the guitar build up and jam, the ooh and ahhs from the backing singers, the simple repetition, the way he simply repeats the motif again after the first six fantastic minutes for another six, the way the lyrics come in with such force, the obvious love he has for his sister, the repetition of her name, the way shame is identified as a KILLER emotion. The b word can be used here as this is genuinely beautiful where the 17 minutes almost seem too short. LOVE IT |

Bob Dylan – Chimes of Freedom Lyrics

At the risk of stating the obvious the words are about 2 people caught in a thunder and lightning storm, sheltering in a doorway, and staring up into the sky. Imagining this scenario and especially if you've been in such a situation yourself takes this song from good to great. Dylan, is untouchable as a vocalist in the way he handles a lyric. These words on paper are flat out great by any standards. Sung by a youthful and starry eyed Dyaln is just too much. Too good. |

Tom Waits – Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis Lyrics
| 13 years ago
|
Yeah, the last verse is an fantastic twist. The song should be heard very much in the context of a christmas card (ok that's obvious) but the mention of valentine's day at christmas time is a touch of songwriting genius. Eligble for parole at Valentine's day to my ears is a subtle marriage proposal or at least the suggestion of it contextulising the preceding lies in the song to 'it could be you, Charlie'. Also for most folks Christmas & Valentine's day are at least happy days but for this hooker they bookend jail time :) Agree with the others who recommend Neko Case's version too as she captures the song perfectly and it also a woman's song so all the better. It is never ok for me to hear 'chrissakes' in a song. so uncomfortable for me although the character would probably use language like that and it also is shocking in terms of a christmas card (christmas being about christ) and probably stuck in there too as a contrast to normal christams references. |

Bob Dylan – The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
great vocal from Dylan - insanely good - better even than say Elkie Brooks (smiles). Worth pointing out that The Groom Still Waiting At The Altar could well be a biblical bridegroom & church reference - much more subtle than those from Slow Train Coming. Makes sense in the light of the previous line:" I see the turning of the page, Curtain risin' on a new age,
See the groom still waitin' at the altar" Kind of anticipating the apocolypse - the groom waiting on the church to bring in a new age. Always thought this was a sensational track in terms of the vocal and that's how i hear this song with the verses lamenting the 'world gone mad' farm animal on a wild goose chase type of thing. solid rock in a world of confusion. |

The Smiths – The Queen Is Dead Lyrics
|
Perhaps Morrissey had in mind the idea of a National Anthem. In the UK it is "God Save The Queen" - of which the clear opposite is "The Queen is Dead". Morrissey probably reckoned a national anthem ought to close with "life is very long when you are lonely" on repeat. -it certainly hits hard. Interestingly Radiohead did a song called "The National Anthem" i think that is not dissimilar - in fact a cousin or baby brother song. |

The Smiths – Ask Lyrics

sex is not love
sex is explosive
sex brings people together
sex is natural
sex is a language (can't you read ?)
sex doesn't always happen - shyness, coyness, not asking
sex requires 'getting out of the house' -then again perhaps not :)
"Because if it's not love, then it's the bomb
That will bring us together"
the bomb is one thing and one thing only and the said quoted line is a touch of class at the musical centrepoint of the song. Its not 'Louder than Bonds' or James Bond or anything like that. |

Sufjan Stevens – Sister Lyrics

suggestion: fish stone may simply be a reference to the well known fish symbol that many Christians have on the back of their cars etc. perhaps sufjan has a stone one sitting on a desk somewhere :) Anyhows, this is another classic song from the man; i think the first verse speaks in a poetic way of simply being what you are and what you are meant to be and how we can have a deep longing for that perhaps feeling we are not quite at that point.... |

Bob Dylan – Gonna Change My Way of Thinking (2003 version) Lyrics

Jesus is coming,
He's coming back to gather His jewels.
Jesus is coming,
He's coming back to gather His jewels.
Well, we live by the Golden Rule,
Whoever's got the gold, rules.
Love the jewels reference and like the twist on the golden rule. Dylan as a vocalist is quite simply beyond compare.
