Joshua Radin – Do You Wanna? Lyrics 14 years ago
Okay. I have two completely biased interpretations because they both tie into my life right now.

*First: It could be about a good friend/ lover trying to help someone work through a drug addiction.
"your lights are turned down low
and your skin feels about to tear
and you is no sound
and all i am is frightened for you now
'cause you run and"

Kind of reminds me of withdrawals and the struggle with addiction. "How can I show you that you're done?" He wants to show her that it's enough. That the superficial connections she's made with artificial chemicals isn't worth it and it's not everlasting. Love is everlasting. And that's what he has to offer her. "holding on to moments that won't last" - Like a high. It only lasts a little while.

"Picking up the pieces from your past
But there's nothing more to gather"
-She wants things to go back to the way they used to be before all the turmoil. But you can't undo what has already been done. And her life is too shattered to piece back together at this point.

"holding on to moments that won't last
or would you rather end it all
do you wanna?"
-Do you want to hold onto this high? This moment? This superficial connection with drugs or people that don't care for you at all? Or do you want it to end? Is death the only solution? Or can you at least try to reverse the damage as best you can and start over?

*Second: It could be about a girl that's stuck in a committed relationship that is kind of working out okay except for the fact that she's falling in love with the singer.

"picking up the pieces from your past
but there's nothing more to gather"
- Could be a reference to how she's trying to save her relationship and isn't allowing herself to accept the fact that maybe someone else can make her happier.

"no one believes you smile alone"
-People are beginning to suspect the girl of cheating perhaps.

"you wanna retrieve your high on the phone"
-The high she gets from talking to the singer on the phone is what pulls her through the situation.

"but when you hang up all I wanna do is help you to
pick up the pieces from your past
but there's nothing more to gather"
-The singer is happy to be that important to her and holds on to the tiniest slimmer of hope that maybe she will choose him. But in the end all he wants is for her to be happy... So he wants to help her pick up the pieces of her doomed relationship so that she can at least be at peace with herself and know that she tried.

"sitting there is him
he has your eyes
calling you to somehow join them
and you're writhin' in your skin
and buyin' his lies
not realizing that you're home
won't you come home and"
-Quite easy to relate both of my interpretations to this particular verse.

Anyway. Like I said; Both my interpretations are extremely biased. But, they work I think.
Either way... It all comes down to one general interpretation.
It's about a person that is faced with a very important decision and they have someone to rely on and trust to help them through.

Ian Van Dahl – Castles In The Sky Lyrics 14 years ago
I really wish we could build anti-gravity castles in the sky.
With that said...
"Please tell me why; do we build castles in the sky?"
Why do you get your hopes up only to be disappointed in the end?
Kind of romantic isn't it?
If you stop hoping and wishing and building and growing...
There's nothing to fall short from. Nothing to hurt you.

So then in reality the question is...
Why are we as human beings so weak?
Why must we have emotions?

Uh Huh Her – Explode Lyrics 15 years ago
I totally see this parallelism between sex and love and the whole concept of giving and receiving equally. And I can see the allusion to prostitution.
But at the same time... I want to relate it to my own personal experience so I correlate it with raving.

For some reason, every time I listen to this song, I just imagine that it's about two girls on Ecstasy dancing together at a rave. And just... Certain lines through out the song seem to allude to the confusion, sensuality, and intensity of Ecstasy.

"I wanna explode"
-That's just how damn good everything feels on Ecstasy.

"So won't you pay if you wanna go down?"
-Paying for that pill in order to see and feel things in the same light.
Paying for that same intensity and sensuality.

"I wanna touch you, slowly"
-Every sensory receptor picks things up more intensely when on Ecstasy, so grazing skin slowly feels amazing.

"Don't walk away, just stay right here"
-Nothing else matters in the one intense moment.

"You have to pay if you want to go"
-Pill wore off, you want more dance?
By me some X. (Lol, That's just what I imagine is going on)

It's just a few lines. And maybe you all think I'm just some drug addict and want to see pill poppers in everyone... But that's just the vibe I pick up from it. It's a little remixy and stuff like trance and what not. And it just describes the way I feel when I'm no E.

It's okay if you think my interpretation is stupid. I just thought some of you might be interested in seeing a different perspective on it.

The Distillers – The Hunger Lyrics 15 years ago
Oh... And by the way...
I think that both obsession, love, and drug abuse are paralled through
and allusion to gods and worship. If that makes any sense.

The way I look at it...
It's about obsession.
Whether it's with drugs (heroin) or a person.
Or perhaps it alludes to both, by relating one to the other in similarity or comparison.

I personally relate to these lyrics, because I've experienced both of the interpretations mentioned above.

The whole begging at one's feet thing is obviously a reference to drug abuse.
The way it takes control over you.
Or the way that obsession takes over all of you.

Elliott Smith – Angeles Lyrics 16 years ago
Oops... On that last sentence I meant to say he "was still emotionally stable." =]

Anyway... Also another line that lets off the fact that "Angeles," is based on the music industry in LA:

"Picking up the ticket shows there's money to be made
Go on and lose the gamble, that's the history of the trade
You add up all the cards left to play to zero
And sign up with evil"

Basically, he's saying that signing yourself to some record label is like selling your soul since they have in a way full authority over you and your music.
I think he's making a reference to Virgin specifically. He's refering to the time he had to wait for Dreamworks to buy him out and he held extreme contempt for the label since the split of Heatmiser and his inability to go to any label of his choice.

Elliott Smith – Angeles Lyrics 16 years ago
This is obviously about the music industry.
If you read "Elliott Smith and the Big Nothing," you will find that he said so himself before.

"Someone's always coming around here trailing some new kill
Says, "I seen your picture on a hundred dollar bill"
And what's a game of chance to you, to him is one of real skill
So glad to meet you
Angeles"

This is basically a reference to the agents scoping out new talent in LA.
Not all of Smith's songs are about drug abuse. Not to mention he only really became hooked on drugs during the recording of "On a Basement on the Hill."
"Angeles," is featured on "Either/ Or" which was long before his downward spiral into drugs since he had not quite hit fame and success and was not still emotionally stable.

Elliott Smith – Between the Bars Lyrics 16 years ago
Between the bars... Drinking... Going from bar to bar. It's really very simple. He's only discussing alcoholism as an escape from the past/memories, or problems. He's embracing this person for who they are. Personally, I think he's embracing himself. This is a song about his own struggle.

Elliott Smith – Say Yes Lyrics 16 years ago
I actually think that it's not completely focused on love or drugs specifically. I think I tie them both in together. I believe it's about coming out of drug abuse for love and finding that unlike the high you get from drugs, love is everlasting and doesn't leave you "feeling like shit the morning after."

I love how Eldritch is conspicuously flaunting Patricia Morrison's initiation into the band with prominent bass lines.
Not to mention the obvious symbolisms and metaphors throughout the song.

Tegan and Sara – Walking with a Ghost Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm sure this song is about T&S's move to Montreal...
But I relate to it differently.

This just reminds me of a situation I found myself in not too long ago.
Being completely in love with an "illusion."
I found hope and opportunity in someone I didn't stand a chance with.
And I tried so hard to push her 'out of my mind'...
But I couldn't get over her.
She seemed to linger.
No matter what I did or where I went...She was there...
Lingering.

I had to CONVINCE myself it wasn't real.
That I stood no chance.
And that I was finally over her.
But no matter...I will always keep her with me in my heart.

From Autumn to Ashes – Short Stories With Tragic Endings Lyrics 17 years ago
So...Basically I didn't quite understand the meaning of this song until just this year. When I experienced all the emotions described in the lyrics first hand. Thing is I fell in love with it from the beginning. And then I fell in love with someone I couldn't have...Even though I was offten lead to believe other wise. This just captivates that feeling perfectly...Having your heart ripped to shreds, betrayed...And still longing for more. This song helped me through it I guess?

Melanie Wills has an amazing voice.
And FATA=amazing...No matter how much I dislike "emocore".
