Dory Previn – Lady With The Braid Lyrics 16 years ago
A heartbreaking song about lonliness.

I know it's probably just what it is; the story of an isolated woman who's trying to get a visitor to stay the night, but when I listen to it I imagine the ghost of the singer trying to talk to men who are dismantling her empty house and not getting any response.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – O'Malley's Bar Lyrics 16 years ago
I think his relationship with his neighbours is interesting.
He seems to know them, but they don't know him. For example, he knows that Kathleen Carpenter was "recently divorced" but Vincent West had no idea that the narrator lived in his street.
This could indicate that part of his motive for the murders was that everyone in the town had treated him like he was invisable. Perhaps they had avoided him because he seemed strange.
Another interpretation could be that he knows their details because he really IS the angel of death. However, I get the impression that he is simply vain, lonely and insane.

The Dresden Dolls – Truce Lyrics 17 years ago
I heard Amanda say in an interview that Truce, Good Day and The Jeep Song are all about the same breakup.

The guy moved to New York just before 9/11 and Amanda was really worried about him and trying to call him. This, of course, explains the references to 9/11.

The Dresden Dolls – Necessary Evil Lyrics 17 years ago
Even thought this is my least favourite song on the album, I still like it. I very much doubt this has anything to do with the song but whenever I hear "Listerine" I think of someone I worked with who had to go to hospital because of Listerine. I don't know if this works with all men or he had an allergic reaction but his girlfriend washed her mouth out with Listerine before giving him oral sex. His penis got painfully swollen. Not a happy experience.

Placebo – Blind Lyrics 17 years ago
I guess I'm also an idiot because I came to the same conclusion as Turbovolver. Why wouldn't Placebo make a song about masturbation? Do you think this idea unlikely because it's such a sad and serious song? If so then try listening to "First Orgasm" by The Dresden Dolls. Masturbation is a sad and lonely thing, just like these songs.

King Missile – Detachable Penis Lyrics 18 years ago
The interpretation about the girlfriend fits in some places, but why would loosing your girlfriend mean sitting down to piss? Also, a penis is about the most masculine thing you can get, so why compare it to a girl.

I love this song... and it has a vein of truth to it. All penises are detachable... just not so easily re-atachable.

Bob Dylan – Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 Lyrics 18 years ago
To me it's about peer pressure because I first heard it at a time when it seemed like every one of my friends had discovered drugs and if you didn't get stoned, you weren't worthy.
It was like a great, destructive wave and the phrase "Everybody must get stoned!" fitted perfectly.

I hated the situation but I still love the song.

The Dresden Dolls – Gravity Lyrics 18 years ago
I always thought it was partly about the model thing and partly about clumsyness... although that doesn't really fit.
I think the title and the lines "I'm getting to familiar with the floor"
"Right foot... Left foot"
and "the sky is always falling down on me" made me think of someone who's clumsy and generally unlucky.

The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics 18 years ago
The lovely Amanda wrote this of "Half Jack"-

"it's about my realtionship with my father, but it's also about the crisis of not knowing what makes you what you are. what identifies you...gender? sex? family? and the unfairness of that."

Katatonia – Omerta Lyrics 18 years ago
I always though Omerta meant Death... so this song might not be about organised crime... just the murder of an old "friend".

David Bowie – Fill Your Heart Lyrics 19 years ago
On Hunky Dory this song is directly after the deeply depressing Quicksand. I love this bizarre contrast between sorrow and ridiculously extreme joy. This is just one of the reasons why this song makes me smile.

Maybe this song is expressing the sheer, dizzying happiness that Love brings:
"Love cleans the mind
And make you Free!"
"Lovers never lose."
etc.

It also explains that Ignorance Is Bliss:
"Forget your head and you'll be free."
This line also makes me think of the phrase "Off your head" which implies that the song is about drugs, most likely stimulents.

My pessimistic brother believes it's supposed to be ironic, like REM's "Shiny Happy People" but I think it's an overall feel good song, not recommended for the over-dignified.
