Frank Turner – English Curse Lyrics 13 years ago
It may well be, I was doing it from memory from his gig in Brixton.

Suede – The Asphalt World Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about Brett's girlfriend at the time of writing Dog Man Star, Anick. She had an affair with another woman, and was also a very fiery woman by all accounts. Surely these are Brett's best lyrics? Amazing.

Patrick Wolf – Overture Lyrics 17 years ago
One of my favs. from the new album. Amazing live.

The View – Wasted Little DJs Lyrics 17 years ago
Most overrated song of last year. It has one of the worst bridges I've ever heard.

Funny, but true. He has awful diction.

The Long Blondes – Once and Never Again Lyrics 17 years ago
I disagree Meinos. Being from a different gender doesn't mean that one cannot relate to another's situation. And the way I see it, he's not saying "leave him, be my partner instead", he's saying "leave him, come out with me, we'll have sex, and all will be good".

Lil Chris – Getting Enough Lyrics 17 years ago
Has anyone noticed that the chorus is very similar to that of "Ever Fallen In Love Someone..." by The Buzzcocks, both musically and lyrically?

submissions
Patrick Wolf – Bluebells Lyrics 17 years ago
It's "compass" in the chorus. Great song. Prefer it live to the recorded version though.

Chuck Berry – You Never Can Tell Lyrics 17 years ago
I really like the Chcuk Berry songs with the one driving rhythm, this is one of those.

New Young Pony Club – Ice Cream Lyrics 17 years ago
great song.

The Long Blondes – Separated By Motorways Lyrics 17 years ago
The romanticism among urban settings is also quite Smiths/Suede/Pulp like.

submissions
Jamie T – A New England Lyrics 17 years ago
Kirsty MacColl has covered it, Billy Bragg's is the original.

The Long Blondes – My Heart Is Out Of Bounds Lyrics 17 years ago
One of their best songs, except for that shouty bit, and the Star Wars diss.

submissions
The Long Blondes – Once and Never Again Lyrics 17 years ago
Sorry to disappoint you, it isn't about lesbian sex. The song is from a man's point of view. Mr Cox may well claim to write from an androgynous perspective, but he's no Brett Anderson, let me tell you. Still, amazing song.

submissions
The Long Blondes – Lust In The Movies Lyrics 17 years ago
The song is called Lust In The Movies, and the other two women mentioned are both actresses, so it seems to me quite clear that it refers to Anna Karina (an actress) as a pose to Karenina (a book). So lookitsme is not a FOOOOOL _ellie, you are.

The Long Blondes – Once and Never Again Lyrics 18 years ago
Nice explanation, hadn't actually thought of it like that. what about the line "Oh, how I'd love to feel a girl your age"? That seems to imply a sexual nature to the song. Not that that rules out the mother theory, it just makes it a bit more unlikely.

submissions
The Smiths – Jeane Lyrics 18 years ago
Quite correct- it's Morrissey's Aunt who is called Jeane, not his Mother. It's been a while since I last read The Severed Alliance, that's my excuse.

submissions
PJ Harvey – Good Fortune Lyrics 18 years ago
Given the dirth of respectable female role models in alternative music, it's no surprise that PJ is influenced by Patti. They're part of the same chain, as it were.

submissions
Neil Young – The Needle And The Damage Done Lyrics 18 years ago
When Pete Doherty did all those New Year shows that one time, a DJ at one of the venues played this before he came on. Nice touch, methinks.

submissions
Neil Young – Winterlong Lyrics 18 years ago
Anyone heard the cover that Pixies did? It's on their B-Sides collection, it's pretty good, nice harmony work from Frank and Kim, cool Joey guitar part as well.

submissions
The Rolling Stones – Street Fighting Man Lyrics 18 years ago
I think Sympathy For The Devil would have been a better choice for V For Vendetta, given that V actually quotes the first line.

submissions
The Long Blondes – Once and Never Again Lyrics 18 years ago
That's mostly right, except it's not lesbian sex. The song was written by a man, it just happens to be sung by a woman.

Billy Bragg – A New England Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm glad I'm not the only person to have noticed that...

Morrissey – Speedway Lyrics 18 years ago
I assume this is about the situation regarding that court case against Mike Joyce. Slam down the hammer, guilt by implication, etc.

How kick ass is that drum fill at the end?

Manic Street Preachers – Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart Lyrics 18 years ago
Conservative say: there ain't no black in the union jack
Democrat say: there ain't enough white in the stars and stripes

No difference between progressives and conservatives when it comes to the issue of race is what I think they're saying here. Interesting that they used Conservative instead of Republican, expands the song beyond being just America.

My fav bit is the bit about privilege, they're saying that most people don't care about social problems so long as they have their little comforts.

Suede – The Asphalt World Lyrics 18 years ago
This is about Brett's then girlfriend Anick, who was at the same time going out with another girl.

The Tears – Apollo 13 Lyrics 18 years ago
Perhaps the climax of the album, Brett says this song is about a "doomed relationship". Could it be that the girl died? The note, "Estuary girl", "I will follow you to the unknown" seem to suggest that.

submissions
The Tears – The Ghost Of You Lyrics 18 years ago
Perhaps the girl from Apollo 13.. perhaps she drowned.

Suede – So Young Lyrics 18 years ago
The best one I've heard is that he says "Seek a" followed by "Star", but I'm not sure what he says after that.

submissions
The Smiths – Jeane Lyrics 18 years ago
The Shaw version is waaay superior. i just figured out the chords on guitar, if anyone's interested let me know.

I think this song may well be about Morrissey's mother, who was called Jeane, I think the kitchen sink and the reference to cleaning may be allusions to that.

submissions
Suede – The Next Life Lyrics 18 years ago
Written for Brett's mother who died of cancer.

submissions
Suede – The Living Dead Lyrics 18 years ago
it's about two cocaine users that Brett knew, who eventually died as a result of their excesses, giving the song an even sadder tinge.

submissions
Suede – My Insatiable One Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about Brett from the perspective of Justine. The inflatable bit is a complete throwaway.

submissions
The Smiths – Asleep Lyrics 18 years ago
Morrissey did not play piano on this track.
The ending music box tones are from a song called Auld Lang Syne, a British traditional new year's song, for any non Brits here. A most fitting choice in my opinion.

This song is best heard as it was on the Ask B-side, where Rubber Ring goes straight into this.

submissions
Manic Street Preachers – 4st 7lb Lyrics 19 years ago
4st. 7lb. is the average weight sufficient to live for an adult human of normal size.

A song about anorexia in teenage girls ostensibly, but its plausability comes from Richey James's own personal afflictions with this condition. The centrepiece of the greatest album ever made for sure.

submissions
The Who – Pure And Easy Lyrics 19 years ago
The climax of lifehouse, the legend of the "note" being passed down through generations I think. The verses seem to relate to how the music liberated the population.

If I ever feel miserable, it only takes one spin of "There once was a note, listen!" to bring me back up!

submissions
The Who – Armenia City in the Sky Lyrics 19 years ago
LSD. Specifically, the nastier sides of LSD, such as confusion ("If you're troubled", "Freak out!") and paranoia ("Rumours floating in your head...etc").

Bernard Butler at his best methinks.

Suede – Still Life Lyrics 19 years ago
The bird sounds made by Bernard Butler's guitar at the end are just sublime.

As with many Suece songs, I think this one is about two people being alienated from everyone else- "they drive by like insects do"
but being happy with what they have because they have each other.

At any rate, one of their best songs, and very important for me and my girlfriend.

submissions
Suede – Trash Lyrics 19 years ago
A beautiful song of alienation, bringing people closer together.

Manic Street Preachers – Life Becoming A Landslide Lyrics 19 years ago
"It comes from the idea that the first thing a baby does is shriek at the horror of it all. And as when you get to adolescence, the rewards of being older don't really give you any satisfaction whether it's getting a car or a fuck or a CD player.
It's also about the fact that, if you go into newsagents and see pornography on the shelfs at an early age, it becomes very difficult to reconceal that with the idea of 'love' that you're presented with later. I think we're romantic people in some ways, but when it comes to relationships it's not a question of 'Can you trust another human being?', so much as a question of trusting yourself. The animalistic nature of man seems to mean that you're bound to find another people physically attractive. And there's something dishonest about shutting those feelings off - it seems puritanical to deny yourself that. The idea of sin is still so widely pervading."

I love the harmonies on this song, that choruc could move countries!

submissions
Manic Street Preachers – Roses In The Hospital Lyrics 19 years ago
"It's about something beautiful, in a decaying place" is a good summary.

Why was this left off their greatest hits? It's the best song off Gold Against The Soul, and it contains the title line of the compilation i.e. Forever Delayed.

submissions
Manic Street Preachers – She Is Suffering Lyrics 19 years ago
Richey always stressed that whole desire thing, but it works on a more basic level as well. It can be summed up on this level as having the message that If You Possess Beauty, You Are It's Victim.

The Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma Lyrics 19 years ago
This song means a lot to my girlfriend and I, it really is our song. I've never beaten her up or put her into a coma, but before we were going out I told her that if she was in a coma I would come and sing this song to her. We were going out 5 days later. So cute!

The Smiths – Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me Lyrics 19 years ago
Actually, the last song that The Smiths played at their last concert was Hand In Glove.

Excluding the rushed issue of There Is A Light..., this was their final song. A fitting tribute methinks.
No humour, no wit, no hidden message. Just an extremely affecting outburst from a charcter at the end of his tether.

Fun fact- Morrisey's vocal was recorded in one take.
