This song is about someone who believes that their love life is cursed. They're asking a heavenly being to intervene.

From Hank to Hendrix definitely shows the passage of time, but more than that he's trying to say that we've been through everything together, we've seen it all. Other metaphors have been used for this, but few actually have used the music as the metaphor; the man is great.

I'd heard back right after the song came out & even some years later that "mellow yellow" was English slang for a gay person, a homosexual & in fact, Donovan & rock music in general was attacked by some Christian fundamentalists as celebrating a gay lifestyle, drug use, & sexual promiscuity.

This is very fascinating to see that all the comments are years old. But the song somehow manages to make everyone feel in some sort of familiar yet diverse sense. For me the scenario mentioned in the song is quite different from my daily life. But it creates an eccentric spark of familiarity hits me whenever I open my little device, plug in the earphones and blast 505. For all my life I tried running away from things thinking I belonged somewhere far away. I still feel the same way after all these years. 505 captures the circumstances just right...

"If it's a 7 hours flight or a 45 minute drive"-I feel like it's the singer willing to go any means to reach his desire, his lover. The similarity that hits me is amusing.

A Little Bitter has fascinated me for a while now and I think everyone's speculation has been pretty reasonable. My only true input is that I think Layne and whoever else wrote the song with him fully intended the song to be interpreted several ways.
A Little Bitter has fascinated me for a while now and I think everyone's speculation has been pretty reasonable. My only true input is that I think Layne and whoever else wrote the song with him fully intended the song to be interpreted several ways.
People have already mentioned drugs, father, parasitic friends, God and organized religion. For me, personally, I thought of Demri as a possible association, as well. She was a model, shared Layne's addiction, shared his friends and acquaintances, etc. Obviously, I don't know all the details of their story but I know at one point Layne was pissed about her seeing another man.
The point in the song that most strongly made me think of her was the body as a dormant altar around which infantile men lie around itching and nibbling for a small piece of sanity of which [you] cannot give. In this interpretation the infantile men would be all the men, possibly including Layne, around Demri seeking brief moment of self-worth through an act of sex or intimacy. Personally, I think those lyrics are an extremely powerful metaphor for the warmth and sanctity of the female body of a tortured woman pursued by men who can't create anything of value for themselves.
Obviously, I'm drawing on some of my own lived experiences with that interpretation but at any rate that's what Alice in Chains always intended. Find your own meaning in the song and hopefully it brings you some solace in this difficult life.
