The song was written for the movie Until the end Of the World\'s storyline, and needs to be understood from that angle. \nI\'m not saying that I disagree with any of the suggested meanings in the comments, and Peter Buck and Bill Berry of course wrote from their own inspirations. But having watched the movie, including the 4 1/2 hrs long version, the simple fact is that one of the main threads in the story circles a love triangle between characters played by William Hurt, Solveig Dommartin, and Sam Neill. \nHe\'s travelling the globe looking for something, she\'s in love and chases him, and her ex sill has feelings for her and follows along - In other words: He\'s got his work - She comes easy - I got stuck somewhere in between.
