I think this song is about a failing relationship where he's lost "overboard". Every time his girlfriend/ex comes around more troubles occur and people are talking about how he's on the outs. The second verse seems like a while later once he has moved on and has heard in passing that she's doing ok. He still doesn't understand why the relationship didn't work out, but has resigned himself to the fact that it is over and so he will speak to her through this song when she hears it on the radio.
