Simon wrote this for his friend Michael Hutchence. Not long after the song was written (within the same year), Michael committed suicide which is incredibly sad but in a way it's nice that Simon was able to write this song for him while he was still alive. He wrote another song for a friend David, "Do You Believe In Shame?", after he'd already died but this one kind of seems as if it could be in memory of Michael but it is the way things should be done, it's nice if you can honor someone while they are still alive and I just think that's beautiful, though sad.
