Too Much

It's about America (or maybe the West in general) and their global appetite for commodities, especially oil (lots of cars in traffic jams, going over my borders, coming into your country...we have a huge appetite for oil), which keeps on growing. We suck it up, it's cheap, and we want more more more. We invade countries and destroy cities (under the guise of moral causes) to get what we want, but we're really just being overindulgent, greedy, eating and drinking too much at the expense of everyone else.

Another wonderful Dave song. I love how inspired the band is, and how they make each song into a little lesson about one thing or another. The video for this one delivers large doses of happiness to the lyrics, and really makes the words come alive.

I believe this song is about people's need for material possetions. About how people continually "eat up" every thing out there, how they "eat too much" of the stuff out there trying to find happiness. Happiness can be found w/out all the excess stuff.

The entire first verse is about gettin' the pipes cleaned... listen to it again. That whole first section can't be mistaken for anything but sodomy.

I heard that Dave wrote this song about alcoholism, and also when he realized that DMB was getting to be something huge.

First of all, the first verse of Too Much is not alluding to sodomy. Too Much according to Dave is about being overly self-indulgent. Drinking, eating, and wanting everything. The whole song is a reference to the materialistic values of society and how we constantly take and take and take, and are still never satisfied. I have a bootleg of Dave's solo act at Farm Aid at the Post Gazette Pavilion, where he changes the lyrics somewhat. Which makes the song allude to corporate farming and the mindless tearing up of the land. But it can be represented in the song without changing the words. The message is clear and simple. To think it has to do with butt-sex, is taking way Way WAY out of context and trying to find some deeper meaning. Accept it at face value, it says what it says, and what it is intended to say.

Going along with Squeege, the song is about self-indulgence. However, there is ample evidence that the song refers to a Cocaine binge. Whether you want to admit it or not, Dave Matthews is not the perfect frat boy you want him to be.

Straight in, suck up and go, cool it, swallow, swallow Put the bill/straw right up your nostril, and snort it. Cool it by clearing your nasal passageways, and swallow the drip. A drip is when the substance that was insufflated slowly leaks down the back of the throat. Suck up and go refers to the immediate energy/mood rush one gets seconds after snorting a line of coke.

The rest of the song takes a more wide-open approach to over-indulgence, but the beginning, to any drug user, is clearly referencing the use of Cocaine.

I was listenin to it just now and i thought it had to with Dave saying that nothing he ever does is good enough for God, not saying thats how i think, but thats what i thought it was about... It kept sounding like someone was accusing him of, and he was mocking them, eating too much, or drinking too much, or just doing something too much, and it say I told God, I'm coming into your country, gunna eat up your cities, like he was mad that he was never good enough for God... Don't get me wrong i love DMB, but i thought that this was the meaning to this song and i kinda didn't like it.

It seems as though the "overindulgence" theme has been thoroughly discussed already, so I'm not really going to touch on that, all I'm going to say is that this has got to be one of the grooviest songs ever, especially the beginning. The line "Ooh traffic jam got more cars than a beach got sand" couldn't be any cooler. Nobody can jam like DMB, and I like this song more for its musical value than for its lyrical value (i.e. meaning). But either way it's awesome.
