All This Is That Lyrics
I am that, thou art that, and all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
This is that
Oooo
Daybreak and I take a glide
Into the pool of peace inside
(Two waves travel by)
To waves and I both travel by
(And that makes all the difference to me)
Life supporting waves of bliss
Mother Divine's precious kiss
Brings with love the light of wisdom
And the gift of eternal freedom
To waves and I both travel by
(... and the nature of man...)
And that makes all the difference to me
(Krishna...)
All this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
This is that
This is that
Dusk time the shadows fall
Into the timeless time of all
To waves and I both travel by
Golden auras glow around you
Omnipresent love surrounds you
Wisdom warming as the sun
You and I are truly one
To waves and I both travel by
And that makes all the difference to me
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that
I am that, thou art that, all this is that

This song, from the album "Carl And The Passions: So Tough" from 1972 is one of the best songs they have ever done. The harmonies are pure magic and everyone's voices sound sublime. Carl's vocals in their finest hour. A very peaceful and addictive song. Amazingly beautiful and one of the best things they put out in the 1970's.
I agree...simply AMAZING. I'm only 19 and I am IN LOVE with this song...I sing it pretty much everyday.
Definitely one of the most harmonically beautiful songs they've done. Not to mention a really addictive melody.
This song seems to be tied into spirituality. I am that, thou art that, all this is that - Soham mantra Krishna Jai guru dev Omnipresent love surrounds you- Om. Some lovely themes to go with this beautiful song.
It's about some of the values of HInduism. This is that in sanskrit is "Tat tvam asi" which is from the Upanishads (an important text of vedic hinduism). See the Wikipedia page below for more info on it.
Jai guru dev (think That Beatles' Across the Universe) is something like "Praise the Divine guru". In the early 70s, when this album came out, Hinduism was all the rage thanks to the Beatles, and this is The Beach Boys' subtly jumping on the bandwagon.

You're forgetting that The Beach Boys had already jumped on the bandwagon towards the tail end of '67!

Love the song, and I just about fell out of my chair when I realized the lyric:
"Two waves and I/both travel by And that makes all the difference/to me"
comes from Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken":
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference."
LYRICAL GENIUS ON THE BEACH BOYS' PART
One of my favorite poems, even before I heard this song. And hearing Carl's incredible interpretation of these lyrics is just beyond what words can say.
