i don't think it's sarcasm.
This is an old religious hymn. Word for word. I think uncle Tupelo had a musical respect for this type of song as they did for the old mining songs. But, I don't necessarily think that they agree with what this is saying. Many people have done this song over the years. In my opinion, based on other Jay Farrars lyrics, I don't think he really believes this. I think most people have done this song because the lyrics are so ridiculous. But still a great song.

This is a cover of The Louvin Brothers tune "The Great Atomic Power," from 1952, not an "old religious hymn." If you grew up during the Cold War you probably wouldn't think the lyrics so "ridiculous." The Louvins were strict Christians, and this song was written and sung by them with great conviction. If you have never heard the Louvins, I suggest you get their CD "When I Stop Dreaming." Some of the songs are religious in nature, but others are not. Plus these guys could do close harmony like nobody else.
ok NE, I didn't know who wrote it and maybe its just a religious "song" and not a "hymn". I understand when it was written and what it is written about. The part that I (and others, I am sure) personally find ridiculous are the parts about "rising to meet your maker", etc. We here about the "last days" all the time, but it never seems to happen when they say it will. Sorry if that offends anyone.
