Can I Tell You Lyrics
Can I tell you something
Got to tell you one thing
If you expect the freedom
That you say is yours
Prove that you deserve it
Help us to preserve it
Or being free will just be
Words and nothing more
Got to tell you one thing
If you expect the freedom
That you say is yours
Prove that you deserve it
Help us to preserve it
Or being free will just be
Words and nothing more

People say freedom is a gift, ut in reality its a right.
This song is short and simple, but straight to the point. You can't expect something for nothing, and if you want to maintain something you possess, you must constantly show that you appreciate it.
This is the first song on their first album. I only had to listen to it first 30 seconds before I was hooked on Kansas. And I completely agree with eternalvayne on the meaning.
this song is mostly known for its instrumentals. I looooooove the instrumentals! yup. you first guys got it right. very easy. I love the violins.
It's the whole concept of "Freedom isn't Free"
If you think about the timeframe this song was written in, and the fact that it was being performed long before it was actually published in 1974, we're talking about the early 1970's.....Vietnam.
I have always interpreted this song to mean that people should support the military and our political leadership's efforts to promote freedom around the world. It was a message to all of the protesters that "Freedom isn't free", it has to be preserved through the willingness to confront your enemies.
These guys weren't from NY or California or other places where there was a lot of protesting. They were from Kansas, which is a pretty conservative place
