This track was previously named "Hero" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/30_Seconds_To_Mars), that demonstrated the lyrics leaning towards that. Year Zero is exactly what it says -- 0 AD/BC. There is controversy whether this year existed, or if 1BC went to 1AD. Just a bit of snippets to add to the meaning --

I think this song is either about reinventing yourself and at the same time not going away, and standing your ground. Or possibly about a world leader somewhere? I really don't know....
