Catch A Wave Lyrics
Everybody tries it once
Those who don't just have to put it down
You paddle out turn around and raise
And baby that's all there is to the coastline craze
You gotta catch a wave and you're sittin' on top of the world
All the surfers going strong
They said it wouldn't last too long
They'll eat their words with a fork and spoon
And watch 'em they'll hit the road and all be surfin' soon
And when they catch a wave they'll be sittin' on top of the world
Every Saturday boy
But don't treat it like a toy
Just get away from the shady turf
And baby go catch some rays on the sunny surf
And when you catch a wave you'll be sittin on top of the world
Catch a wave and you'll be sittin' on top of the world
Catch a wave and you'll be sittin' on top of the world
This is definitely a ringing endorsement of surfing. Ironically, the Beach Boys weren't much into surfing; only the drummer Dennis Wilson was a surfer.
(Wow, no comments yet). This songs is pure Beach Boys, and also one of their "best of the best". Like most of their songs from their 'golden era', this is a happy, summertime, put-you-in-a-good-mood song. Gotta love the rock-n-roll organ.
Just the fast lead in with deep drum reminds me of the quick few strokes before you actually "catch a wave!" Then, just to let the statement sit there in the opening . . . "Catch a wave and you're sitting on top of the world" . . . boom, so sweet, uber cool!

Normally I'm not a fan of comments that don't describe the meaning of a song (most posts on this site), but there isn't anything to explain about the Beach Boys' lyrics, because they're as simple and straightforward as you can get. So instead I'll just point out that this is an excellent song, and be sure to also listen to the instrumental version on Stack-O-Tracks.
