One In Ten Lyrics
I am a one in ten, a number on a list
I am a one in ten, even though i don't exist
Nobody knows me, but im always there
A statistic, a reminder of a world that doesn't care
My arms enfold the dole queue, malnutrition dulls my hair
My eyes are black and lifeless with an underprivileged stare
I'm the beggar on the corner, will no-one spare a dime?
I'm the child that never learns to read because no one spared the time
I am a one in ten a number on a list
I am a one in ten even though i don't exist
Nobody knows me, but im always there
A statistic a reminder of a world that doesn't care
I'm the murderer and the victim, the licence with the gun
I'm a sad and bruised old lady in an ally in a slum
I'm a middle aged businessman with chronic heart disease
I'm another teenage suicide in a street that has no trees
I am a one in ten a number on a list
I am a one in ten even though i don't exist
Nobody knows me, but im always there
A statistic a reminder of a world that doesn't care
I'm a starving third world mother, a refugee without a home
I'm a house wife hooked on Valium, I'm a Pensioner alone
I'm a cancer ridden spectre covering the earth
I'm another hungry baby, I'm an accident of birth
I am a one in ten a number on a list
I am a one in ten even though i don't exist
Nobody knows me, but im always there

when this song first came out I had just finished college and was looking for a job in 80's. Unemployment was rife and this struck a chord as I felt like a one in ten. But by a one in ten chance I managed to get a Job!!!
(I didn't grow up in the 80s) But - I think the one in ten thing means that one in ten people were unemployed (not a one in ten chance of getting a job as fergi suggested) Still, that was an average across the whole country and in some towns up north almost everyone was unemployed.
UB40, being a multi-cultural band in the first place, they have a message about equality and bringing to light the struggles of the people that don't have a voice otherwise... Listen to Tyler or Food For Thought and you will see that those songs are not about the band themselves but about issues that should be talked about and addressed instead of ignored. Early UB40 was the best, not after Labour Of Love and they became radio friendly with their covers of pop songs.
