Kingston Town Lyrics

The night seems to fade,
But the moonlight lingers on
There are wonders for everyone
The stars shine so bright,
But they`re fading after dawn
There is magic in Kingston Town

(chorus)

Oh Kingston Town,
The place I long to be
If I had the whole world
I would give it away
Just to see, the girls at play
Ooh, ooh, ooh

And when I am king,
surely I would need a queen
And a palace and everything, yeah
And now I am king,
And my queen will come at dawn
She`ll be waiting in Kingston Town

(chorus)

And when I am king,
surely I would need a queen
And a palace and everything, yeah
And now I am king,
And my queen will come at dawn
She`ll be waiting in Kingston Town

I really don't see it as sad. I see it as an ode to a place he loves in Jamaica. He is saying his queen will come soon. This is really one of my favorite UB40 songs!

i think its an ode to kingston town (and the girls of) in jamaica. if he had the whole world he'd give it away to see the girls of kingston at play. his queen will be waiting for him at kingston town.

"When I am king" ... ..... Kingston Town has slavery embedded in it's history, with this in mind, I feel like Lord Creator is painting a picture of a slave finally freed and making his way to Kingston Town, which sounds like the place to be, a place where his dreams take him.

My Interpretation

Black people have done stuff besides being slaves for the last couple of centuries... Even besides complaining about it. Indeed apart from in certain countries, that really ought to get their culture together, slavery hasn't been an issue since a while after 1833.

This is just a song about any ordinary guy, who might be black, though there are lots of white Jamaicans, who longs for his hometown. People have been writing songs about that since the beginning.

Good point, but I think people in 1970 had better things on their minds than just ordinary guys.
