Tuesday Morning Lyrics
Too many sad days
Too many Tuesday mornings
I thought of you today
I wished it was yesterday morning
I thought of you today
I dreamt you were dressed in mourning
But I knew that you
With your heart beating
And your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you
On a Tuesday morning
I fell through the window
And I found that I was still breathing
I thought of tomorrow
And the fear that you might leave me
I thought of tomorrow
And I wished it was Monday morning
But I knew that you
WIth your heart beating
And your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you
On a Tuesday morning
Turn your face from me
And I will cover myself with sorrow
Bring Hell down upon me
I will surrender my heart to sorrow
Bring Hell down upon me
And I will say goodbye tomorrow
But I knew that you
With your heart beating
And your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you
On a Tuesday morning
Too many Tuesday mornings
I thought of you today
I wished it was yesterday morning
I thought of you today
I dreamt you were dressed in mourning
With your heart beating
And your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you
On a Tuesday morning
And I found that I was still breathing
I thought of tomorrow
And the fear that you might leave me
I thought of tomorrow
And I wished it was Monday morning
WIth your heart beating
And your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you
On a Tuesday morning
And I will cover myself with sorrow
Bring Hell down upon me
I will surrender my heart to sorrow
Bring Hell down upon me
And I will say goodbye tomorrow
With your heart beating
And your eyes shining
Would be dreaming of me
Lying with you
On a Tuesday morning

This guy loves his woman so much that, even though he knows she will be leaving him soon, he is willing to endure that pain in order to stay in the moment with her now. He knows it will be painful as hell when she leaves, but he is willing to endure that pain, just to experience the joyful feelings of being in love that they have now.
Hence "Turn your face from me/I will cover myself with sorrow/Bring hell down upon me/I will surrender my heart to sorrow". He anticipates the pain and sadness that is coming. But he also knows that she loves him, and he loves her. And he doesn't feel like those feelings will fade.
@marykaplan beautiful interpretation. One I take to heart now every time I listen to it. The song is one of those Kim Weston or if one prefers, Doobie Bros “Take Me In Your Arms” kind of anthems for one who will be there until the very end.

This is a beautifully soft song, and reminds me always of summer mornings, and waking up next to the person you love. Amazing xxx
True, although I think it's about sadness, about missing someone.
I'm amazed this song has never been linked to 9/11, as if you imagine the lyrics come from a firefighter lost on that day, it's eerie. (Fell through the window/dressed in mourning/Wish it was Monday evening, etc.). Great song!
@DougMash, it has been, but i think this song is far too cheerful to be linked to death
its about his gf going to the usa
This is one of my favourite Pogues songs, even despite the absence of Shane's input.
I met a particular girl once and spent a lovely night with her. Woke up and it was Tuesday Morning.
