Sentimental Man Lyrics

There is no heaven and there's no hell
No limbo inbetween -- I think it's all a lie
Just a white light out to velvet black
and back to neutral gray -- that's all when we die

There is no fate that divides our day
no spirits hard at work, no unseen hand at play
people talk like it's a given thing
I dunno what they mean -- nor, I suspect, do they
I guess that's OK

But how do you know I'm not a sentimental man?
is it really so hard to see these things? I guess it is
I really don't know why, I think it's right there
nobody's perfect, but I'm doing what I can
and you best believe I'll keep it real

I'm an old testament kind of guy
I like my coffee black, and my parole denied
even as I flake on every deal
I ever made with myself before the ink could dry
I should keep that one inside...

How do you know I'm not a sentimental man?
is it really so hard to catch that vibe? I guess it is
I couldn't tell you why, I think it's plain to see
certain distaster, and I really couldn't say how the fuck I let this get that far

How do you know I'm not your biggest fan?
Can you really make this case so clear? I think you can't
I don't know why you try, I think it's all a game
I'm under the covers and I'm telling you goodnight
'cos I plan to have some real fine dreams

As an athiest i understand most of what he's talking about. the whole question of being a sentimental man comes from religious people accusing atheists of being immoral jerk-offs. We have morals just like everybody else, we just make them for ourselves instead of having it all laid out for us. And i think the forth stanza is supposed to be sarcastic, playing on the expectations of religion and flaking on goals you make for yourself, something EVERYONE does. athiests just see the world as it is without adding some crazy element into it to explain things.

Or, look at it as a reply to any belief. The last part sums it up nicely, for me. I don't think it's just a "go atheism!" song, though. I think it just asks the question "why believe in anything at all?" and says that asking that question doesn't make you an amoral fuck who believes in nothing at all. It's just a question, not an assertion that you're an unfeeling person, unable to understand empathy.

I've listened to this song almost daily since I got it...so it's a real surprise that I just realized he says 'fuck.' Just proves one can always look deeper...

do you really hear the part about "catch that vibe" in the penultimate stanza? it sounds to me as if he simply repeats the line "is it really so hard to see these things?"

and i think that he says "i couldn't tell you why" in both cases, not just the second time

and in the last stanza it seems as if he is saying "i guess it's all a game"

Sigh, that was dumb.

Anyway, I think that the song doesn't really need much analyzing, read the lyrics, they're extremely straight-forward.
