Should've Been A Cowboy Lyrics
I bet you've never heard ole Marshall Dillion say
Miss Kitty have you ever thought of running away
Settling down will you marry me
If I asked you twice and begged you pretty please
She'd of said Yes in a New York minute
They never tied the knot
His heart wasn't in it
Stole a kiss as he road away
He never hung his hat up at Kitty's place
I should've been a Cowboy
I should'be learned to rope and ride
Wearing my six-shooter riding by pony on a cattle drive
Stealing the young girl's hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those campfire songs
I should've been a cowboy
I might of had a side kick with a funny name
Running wild through the hills chasing Jesse James
Ending up on the brink of danger
Riding shotgun for the Texas Rangers
Go west yound man, haven't you been told
California's full of whisky, women and gold
Sleeping out all night beneath the Texas stars
Dream in my eye and a prayer in my heart
I should've been a Cowboy
I should'be learned to rope and ride
Wearing my six-shooter riding by pony on a cattle drive
Stealing the young girl's hearts
Just like Gene and Roy
Singing those campfire songs

IDK maybe its just about making a poor life disicion that changed his life forever
This is such a great song! I've loved it since the very first time i heard it! Country music is great and if any of you dis it then you suck and toby keith is king!
Not sure if it's true or not, but I heard this song is about how much Toby Keith regrets not taking the contract he was offered with the Dallas Cowboys.
@ja3688 It came to him when he was in Dodge City, KS. He was with a group of hunters. Older hunter guy asked a waitress for a dance and she turned him down. But a younger cowboy asked he and they danced. The "Never hung his hat at kitty's place" is a direct reference to miss kitty's that's a restaurant here in Dodge. He's done several interviews about it.

actually i dont know why toby would regret not joining the dallas cowboys when hes now famous. but actually this was one of his first songs and i saw on CMT one day and it looked like he had a rpetty hard time with his music starting off so maybe.
I HATE CMT but i love toby keith and THIS SONG
This was the theme song for my life several years ago when I lived in California. Originally from the northeast, I moved out there and lived damn near this lifestyle. Changed me forever and have a new found respect for the country and ranchers. I then made the biggest mistake of my life. Taking a job in NYC.
It took me a little bit of research to find out that the first verse of the song is referencing the TV show Gunsmoke. That might be interesting for some of you.
Yep. The first verse refers to the characters Marshal Matt Dillon and Kitty Russell of the show Gunsmoke.

Also, the chorus references Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, both American country performers from waaaaay back in the day.

I think he is singing of opportunities that have passed him by and he now regrets not pursuing them.
