Loose Leaves Lyrics

The story's in the soil
Loose leaves cover the ground
There are volumes in the forest no one reads out loud
If I could take them down, off of that mountain shelf
We used to climb but no one tries to go up that far now

Yeah, we're all too busy working
Entertaining ourselves
40 hours, television, and prescription pills
Well, I take two a day to make my brain behave
It never does, but who's to say?
At least my doctor gets paid

So that is fine, yeah, come by
We'll take the afternoon off
We can kiss and undress
Or if you want, just talk
Because I have got nothing real
Just empty space to fill
And you're my girl, I like your style
Just imagine all the time we could kill

And time's not poison
But once you drink it all, you'll die
So let's just sip it real slow
Yeah, we can nurse it all night
Try to believe that once it's gone
They'll pour another round, we'll come back to life
Yeah, we'll come right back...

It's all moving fast now, yeah
And that's what they say
And though some days still take forever
I can't disagree
Because it seems to me
That I wake up and sleep
Look in the mirror and have no idea
What happened in-between

But I remember counting days down
Until the year could be done
So I could scatter all my notebooks on the prep school lawn
And disappear into a summer's bliss
Of staying out and sleeping in
And getting drunk with my friends

And that's gone and I know
That it won't ever come back
I accept, I won't cling to what I had in the past
But life is a slippery slope
Regret the steepest hill
Hope for the best, plan for the worst
And maybe wind up somewhere in the middle

And I'm not saying that I know what I want
But I know what I don't
Don't want to rot in my room
And never know what could have been
Believe what everyone else tells me is true...

Yeah, what they'll say; "True!"
That is what they'll say
That's it
Believe what everyone else tells me is true
They will say: "True!"
That is what they'll say
That's it...

the first time i heard this track, i thought it was a joke or something... conor playing bouncy newwave pop? but, it has to be one of the best bright eyes tracks out there for being happy, something i'm bad at.

I think there's a play on words in the first line:

"The story is in the soil Loose leaves cover the ground"

I know the song title is loose leaves, but I think it can be interpreted as "loose leafs," meaning notebook paper. Especially since he talks about a "story" that "No one reads." Maybe I'm just reading into it too much. The next verse blows me away when he says:

"So I could scatter all my notebooks On the prep school lawn"

I don't even wanna try to interpret it, but I just think it's really profound how many patterns and ideas pop out of Conor's lyrics. If your comparing movie's to music, I think it's fair to say that listening to his lyrics is like watching one of those discovery channel documentaries about space except this time you're watching it at a huge 3D IMAX type of movie theater. When he gets going it's like watching shooting stars leap from the screen and dissolve into my mind. The lyrics have a lot of symmetry in them, kinda like the weird symmetry that's present in life. You know, the type of stuff you see out of the corner of your eye but can't quite put your finger on. He should be nominated to be a poet laureate or something. I'll be damned if any poem ever hit me right square in the head like Conor's lyrics do. This lyrics aren't catchy and saturated like the musical equivalent of fast-food. They are really wholesome and nutritious. Sweet as honey in their honesty too. I swear, if Buddhist's studied his albums, they would all agree that he is a Bodhisattva.

First time I heard that line, it was total deja vu. It was like someone had said those exact words, giving me advice of some sort.

i got the no beginning... ep before the album, but knew what the album was going to be called, and assumed that the title (lifted or the storys in the soil, keep your ear to the ground) came form the first line of this song and the ending of We Are Free Men, but then when i got the album, about half of the songs mentioned lifted - i think thats his theme of the new album, (just like the theme of the last one was reflection) - things are bad but could get better.

i also haven't seen a mention of keep your ear to the ground in lyrics - although it is close to the line after the story is in the soil, loose leaves cover the ground.

am i just trying to read to much into this now?

(also the ep title can be found in track two of the new album, method acting... im definetely overdoing this now...)

rob c kelly- i always think im reading too deeply into the connections within his lyrics, but you know what, i think hes just such a damn good lyricist that every little thing you notice was put there on purpose for you to notice. there are a lot of good songwriters out there, but not all lyrics work with out the music. connors lyrics read like poetry. theyre amazingly well structured by themselves, and are just enhanced by the music. and yeah, the connections bridge songs, too. hes so good incorporating all the songs into one theme, but still keeping them as individual elements. bright eyes isnt even my favorite band, and i dont know if connor is my favorite lyricist, but you cant help but be damn, damn impressed byt the stuff he writes
