Hold on to the thread
The currents will shift
Glide me towards...
You know something's left
And we're all allowed
To dream of the next
Oh, ohh the next, time we touch...
Oooh... (4x)
You don't have to stray
Tho oceans away
Waves roll in my thoughts
Hold tight the ring...
The sea will rise...
Please stand by the shore...
Oh, oh, oh, I will be...
I will be there once more...
Oooh... (4x)
Uh huh, oh yeah... (2x)
The currents will shift
Glide me towards...
You know something's left
And we're all allowed
To dream of the next
Oh, ohh the next, time we touch...
Tho oceans away
Waves roll in my thoughts
Hold tight the ring...
The sea will rise...
Please stand by the shore...
Oh, oh, oh, I will be...
I will be there once more...
Uh huh, oh yeah... (2x)

Any type of water in the lyrics symbolizes the love between Eddie and his lover. It's any time Eddie mentions water in this song, whether it be waves, currents, or the oceans.
The currents will shift - our love will shift and become true again
You don't have to stray the oceans away - you don't have to push our love away
Waves roll in my thoughts - I think about our love all the time
The sea will rise - our love will rise and become what it was when we were happy
Stand by the shore - give the love between them a chance
Anyone else get completely hypnotized when listening to this song?
Being a guy, a straight one, I feel comlpetely sexually secure about my identity, if say that Eddie vedder seduces me..... ;)
just kidding, I love this song, it shows that even when Pearl Jam were in their pissed off grunge phase, that there was something more to them.....
Bro...no apologies necessary. I am straight hetero...but Eddie gets what Eddie wants...period.

@N0 C0DE 79 Man, I'm 100% straight and I completely get seduced by Eddie in this and other songs. So you're not alone my friend.

In the unplugged version of this back in the day, eddie changed the last "oh yeah"'s to "oh Beth, oh beth," his wife. I don't know if the unplugged concert of this was before or after or during their separation. I'm about to leave for college and it sucks (in terms of friendships and relationships), this song is all i think about. MY favorite line is "...We're all allowed to dream of the next time we touch..."
i think the word were all looking for when we try to tell what eddie vedders lyricsa are about is Metaphor. or Ambiguous. his lyrics sound like theyre about multiple things. its on purpose. its his style
probably the best song on ten
Eddie says at the end of the song: "A little love song I wrote about my surfboard (laughing), no actually it's about somebody named Beth, so hopefully I'll see her more. And what is this? It is a state of love and trust." After listening to it several times, I believe that is what he says.
there i no "think" about, Eddie says on the unplgged version "that was a little love song I wrote about my surfboard... no actually its for someone named beth who hopefully i'll see tomorrow" This also shows it is before he broke up with her.
Great song, very sad, as every separation is...
This is song is fantastic , i have heard it so many times and it still makes me sad , this is probably my favourite song on " Ten "

Awesome song...amazing lyrics about a topic that everyone can relate to.
I think you have got it all wrong. This is simply a song about Eddies love of Surfing. He wrote it on the beach, and there are direct comments to surfing.
