This is most definitely a sailing song- about getting away from the rat race and getting out on the water on your sailboat alone. It's not really selfish to want time alone....just some time to breathe the air and recharge. Getting away from everyday life and out on the ocean for a peaceful sail is a "cool change". I can't be on a sailboat without thinking of this song.
Great song. It's basically about just living in a hectic world, wanting to just cool off, just chill, get away from it all. I guess it could be like an environmental song too (it was released in 1977 when that kind of thing was big I guess), talking about the oceans, and animals, etc. etc. Mainly it's a song about wanting to get back to basics, and having gone so far in your life you feel like you have to stop for a minute and think about what you're doing, where you're going, etc.
I think this is just about his amazin love of the ocean and sailing. He uses sailing his boat as an escape from his problems in life.
The song is also saying something along the lines of the sea/water/ocean is his only true love, "I've never been romantic And sometimes I don't care I know it may sound selfish But let me breathe the air"

For me, the message of the song simply tells us that we should have time for ourselves, to relax and reflect. We should count our blessings and have time to think of how many Hearts we have touched as well as how many Goals we have achieved.
This song is about a business owner. It tells about how he is always spending his time pleasing those around him, and not himself. He is in the heated time of the business, very busy and never taking a vacation. It is taking a toll on his life, he wants a cool change. Making his life easier, having a family, and mainly time to relax from the stress. The waters have been rough in his life and now he is ready to start dating women, and let everything go so he can finally live a life for himself.

I think this song is about a man getting older and missing the carefree days of his youth. Maybe he lived in a coastal town or just spend a lot of time on the water. He thinks back to when he had no responsibilities, unlike now (Now that my life is so prearranged). There is a part of him that longs for those times, but we can't always go back.
I think that this beauty of a song can relate to all of us. With this hectic and trying times, it reminds me all need to take the time to relax and enjoy the simple things in life like the ocean or the joy of just relaxing
