You Don't Care About Us

Call me crazy, but the first time I heard the first verse it reminded me a lot of a suicide attempt - this is probably only because I relate the words to what happened to me.

"If it's a bad day, you try to suffocate. Another memory... scarred." - You have a bad day, so you try to end it all (suffocate), but it doesn't work, so you're left with "another memory scarred."

"If it's a bad case, then you accelerate, you're in the getaway... car" - nothing's working, so you try to "accelerate" the natural process of death. The getaway car could be suicide, eg. a means of getting away.

Some things fit with this idea, eg. "you don't care about us" and "mental masturbation" - all you care about is yourself and your happiness, you want to die, but then you're not only ending your life but our relationship as well. And "You're at the wrong place, you're on the back page, you're in the getaway... car." - the wrong place and back page referring to death and that it's not time to die. Again, the getaway car.

"You're too complicated, we should separate it." is self explanatory. But this is only my take, and I'm sure it's wrong as many things don't fit - eg. I have no idea what "It's a matter of trust." and "It's your age, It's my rage." could mean.

Brian Molko says: "It's about an ex-lover having a furious rant at me for not caring and being wrapped up in my own head. Unfortunately, that's how I used to conduct my relationships: I was always imagining the end just as it was beginning."

mental masterbation is thinking only of the self and what you want for yourself.

ohh the pary "its your age, its my rage" reminds me of a guy i had a semi-relationship with. He is 2 and half years older, and he used that as an exuse not to go out with me. because i was 16 and he was just 19...jail bait stuff... and that just reminds me of that. plus he only thought about himself. and i am too emotional and shit. so yeah.. it all works.

I woke up this morning and after about 6 monthes of having the album I finally got that he was saying it like an unsatisfied GF/BF would say to his/her partner...I know it's obvious etc, but hey...

I'd always thought that it was like a kid shouting at his parents,like, the whole "you don't understand me because you're old" issue?

Anyhoo, I've now figured that it's like you don't care about "us" as in our relationship, so yay.

Also I would like to point out the genius in ryhming "complicated" with "seperate it."

Like I said. Woo.

This song means a lot to me because of a discussion it gets mentioned in between Brian and a group of others, Stefan and Steve inc. Brian is talking about his depression - a subject very close to home with me anyway. but he describes his taking of prozac to ease his depression and he talks about the effects of such types of anti-depressants. the first time i'd seen that conversation was when i'd been taking anti-depressants for about a month and a half and what Brian said about them was just so true - i felt happy that someone had described so accurately what those drugs do to you. he described it perfectly in a way i'd not been able to articulate until that moment. he talks about how he stopped taking the prozac and when the effects had worn off he immediately got annoyed at himself and sat down and wrote "You Don't Care About Us" - i listened to this song again after that interview and it meant so much more to me because of what it had been associated with at the time of it's creation. It being a product of feelings so close to my heart makes it a very special song to me.

so few comments. dissapointing. One of my fav Placebo songs. You guys hav got the meaning pretty much down straight so just thought id add to say i luv it very honest very real.
