I know
You love the song but not the singer
I know
You've got me wrapped around your finger
I know
You want the sin without the sinner
I know
I know
[Chorus]
I know
The past will catch you up as you run faster
I know
The last in line is always called a bastard
I know
The past will catch you up as you run faster
I know
I know
I know
You cut me loose in contradiction
I know
I'm all wrapped up in sweet attrition
I know
It's asking for your benediction
I know
I know
[Chorus: x2]
You love the song but not the singer
I know
You've got me wrapped around your finger
I know
You want the sin without the sinner
I know
I know
[Chorus]
I know
The past will catch you up as you run faster
I know
The last in line is always called a bastard
I know
The past will catch you up as you run faster
I know
I know
I know
You cut me loose in contradiction
I know
I'm all wrapped up in sweet attrition
I know
It's asking for your benediction
I know
I know
[Chorus: x2]

for me it was always obvious that the song is about lust. "you love the song, but not the singer" means that you only desire the person, but without any further commitment. and "the past will catch you up as you run faster" means that you can't do things without thinking, because they can have fatal influence on your further life (for example you already have a boyfriend who you love and who would brake up with you if you cheated on him). so, there are two people who want to have sex and the desire is enormous, but they shouldn't do it. i always thought so...
