Times Of Trouble Lyrics
When the spoon is hot
And the needle's sharp
And you drift away
Ooooh, I can hear you say
That the world in black
Is upon your back
And your body shakes
So you ditch away
And you close the shades
Don't try to do it
Don't try to kill your time
Ohhhh, Yeah, yeah. You might do it
Then you can't change your mind
Ohhh, ohhh, You've got a hold on to your time
Till your break through these
Times of trouble
When you try to talk
And the words get hard
And they put you down
Don't you stay
Don't you ditch away
I saw you swinging
Swinging your mother's sword
Ohhh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you're playing but
Sometimes the rules get hard, ohhhh, ohhh
But if somebody left you out on a ledge
If somebody pushed you over the edge
If somebody loved you and left you for dead
You got to hold on to your time and break
Through these times of trouble
And the needle's sharp
And you drift away
Ooooh, I can hear you say
That the world in black
Is upon your back
And your body shakes
So you ditch away
And you close the shades
Don't try to kill your time
Ohhhh, Yeah, yeah. You might do it
Then you can't change your mind
Ohhh, ohhh, You've got a hold on to your time
Till your break through these
Times of trouble
And the words get hard
And they put you down
Don't you stay
Don't you ditch away
Swinging your mother's sword
Ohhh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know you're playing but

But if somebody left you out on a ledge

If somebody loved you and left you for dead
You got to hold on to your time and break

this song was meant to maybe make us see the light at the end of the tunnel. the lyrics explain that no matter how terribly low you've sank, that time will heal you. chris basically says "Don't do what Andy did. Don't fall into the trap of heroin. Don't loose hope, and don't fall short of your full potential". the part of the song that speaks to me the most is " i somebody left you out on a ledge and if somebody pushed you over the edge, and if somebody LOVED YOU AND LEFT YOU FOR DEAD, youve gotta hold on to your time till you break through these times of trouble". don't forget what they've done is what he's trying to say, but move on and learn.

Good thought. The only lyric that seems to be out of place (but is decently cool) is "I saw you swingin your mother's sword". The rest of the whole song i can decipher the lyrics to real life situations but that one line escapes me. Maybe i'm just out of time on expressions (shrug)...

this song is amazing and just recently, being a huge pj fan(look at all my posts)have finally accepted tht this is better than footsteps(although also very powerfull as the execution in the mamason trilogy)
the last five lines is the best part of the song
chris cornell and eddie should do an albm together, tht would be amazing...you already see what both their voices in one song sounds like-hunger strike
Stone Gossard had the riff that became both Times of Trouble and Footsteps (Pearl Jam). Stone gave the demo of the riff to both Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder at the same time. The tune and lyrics that Vedder put to the song became Pearl Jam's Footsteps and Cornell's became Times of Trouble.
Everyone else basically summed up this song I just wanted to say that this one really stands out to me in the music and the emotion behind the lyrics. This is a really great group with some of the best talent on the grunge scene. It's too bad they had to form under such terrible circumstances.
An unreal song with a lot of depth and meaning... He couldda just as easy been singing about Layne, or Kurt or any number of fallen stars.

This song helped me through a lot of tough times in my life. One of my favs from the entire album, along with Hunger Strike and Say Hello 2 Heaven. High school was pretty rough for me. I was a loner, parents were always fighting and threatening divorce (thankfully never came) and I used to drink a lot with my friends. I was on a wrong road. PJ and Soundgarden were also huge helps. Music really helped me to cope with a lot of problems.
The music from this song was used for Pearl Jam's song "Footsteps".
i think it s the other way around, firts there was footsteps, and the music of footsteps is used for this song. what's it about, abvious the death of andy wood.
Haha, first there was Footsteps? I don't think so. ToTD pre-dates Pearl Jam. Do your research. At the time this song was recorded Pearl Jam didn't even exist yet. The song Hunger Strike, from the same album as this song was the first professional recording of Eddie Vedder singing vocals.
